Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer
American Red Cross of Massachusetts seeks a Building Engineer based in Dedham, Massachusetts with travel across the state.
Job OverviewUnder minimal guidance, the Building Engineer will oversee and conduct maintenance and repair in regulated American Red Cross buildings. The role includes advising on building systems, electricity, equipment repair, design, and general maintenance. The engineer will maintain knowledge of structural and control systems, code issues, etc., complying with SOPs and regulations.
Key Responsibilities- Act as onsite subject matter expert on building engineering, advising on planning of building systems, electricity, equipment repair, design, and maintenance.
- Perform service work in specialized building systems (mechanical, electrical/electronic, hydraulics, carpentry, machine servicing), assist operations and maintenance, troubleshoot, conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC and related machinery.
- Ensure regulatory operations meet compliance standards, maintain ongoing regulated training and role‑specific training.
- Enforce safety policies and procedures, perform facility safety and fire extinguisher inspections, schedule fire drills, maintain safety documentation, oversee emergency generator, create/issue security access cards, monitor surveillance system.
- Oversee and maintain the facility maintenance work‑order system, coordinate and submit work orders, provide maintenance dispatch for emergencies.
- Provide administrative support – coordinate preventative maintenance schedules, order supplies, record and log maintenance, maintain equipment operational logs.
- Manage regulated supplies and oversee bio‑waste pick‑ups, supplies and destruction manifests as required.
- Education:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent trade school certificate required. Current Universal Refrigerant license, OSHA 10 and HVAC certification required. ASHE membership or ability to obtain preferred. - Experience:
Minimum 7 years of related experience, preferably in laboratory, hospital, SDS or CGMP environments. - Management

- Operate independently with initiative and minimal supervision.
- Competent in electrical and plumbing knowledge.
- Basic knowledge of emergency power generators.
- Ability to assess building envelope (roof, structure, etc.).
- Familiar with NFPA fire codes, building codes, NEC electrical codes, PMs and PM management systems; experience with training teams, capital project forecasting and annual budgets.
- Relationship management experience with vendors, partners, suppliers.
- Read and understand MEP and wiring diagrams.
- Team collaboration ability.
Some travel required. A current valid driver's license is required.
Pay InformationSalary range (Massachusetts): $101,400 – $108,096.
