The American National Red Cross seeks a Building Engineer to support our Facilities & Maintenance team. This role ensures safe, efficient operation of building systems-including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and life-safety equipment-across our mission-driven, humanitarian organization. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, vendor coordination, and support for renovation projects. The ideal candidate has strong technical skills, a customer-service mindset, and embraces our culture of compassion, collaboration, diversity, and volunteerism while helping sustain critical services for communities in need.
Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor, and maintain building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and life-safety equipment to ensure reliable facility operation.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
- Respond promptly to service requests, alarms, and urgent maintenance issues to support mission-critical Red Cross operations and programs.
- Support disaster response readiness by ensuring facilities, warehouses, and blood collection sites remain safe, functional, and compliant.
- Conduct regular inspections of building interiors, exteriors, and grounds, identifying and addressing maintenance and safety concerns.
- Collaborate with the Engineering, Maintenance & Asset Management team to prioritize work orders and coordinate repairs with vendors and contractors.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, inspections, and equipment performance using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Assist with small building projects, equipment installations, and facility upgrades to support evolving program and operational needs.
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, safety regulations, environmental standards, and Red Cross policies and procedures.
- Support energy efficiency and sustainability efforts by monitoring system performance and recommending improvements.
- Communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and leadership regarding facility conditions, service impacts, and repair timelines.
- Participate in on-call rotations and occasionally work evenings or weekends during emergencies, major events, or disaster responses.
