Position Overview
A truly unique opportunity at a special site—18,000 acres of rugged and undeveloped land on the cleanest river in Texas—located along Devils River. Under the direction of the Site Superintendent and daily supervision by the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs highly complex (senior-level) maintenance and construction work at Devils River State Natural Area.
Responsibilities- Oversee the daily operation, maintenance, and repair of facilities, grounds, trails, equipment and visitor services.
- Assist with enforcement of park rules, resource management tasks, and interpretive programs or special events.
- Perform administrative duties, prepare reports, and provide high‑quality customer service.
- Coordinate and lead classified, hourly, and volunteer staff.
- Assist with preservation of natural and cultural resources in coordination with area staff, regional resource specialists, and TPWD.
- Work under limited supervision, exercising initiative and independent judgment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned and comply with all agency rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Be comfortable operating kayaks and canoes, including overnight kayak patrols down Devils River.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Four years of facility, road, equipment, or grounds maintenance experience.
- Valid Texas state driver’s license.
Thirty semester hours of accredited college coursework may substitute for one year of required experience, up to a maximum of two years.
Preferred Qualifications- Wide range of construction, repair, and maintenance experience.
- Experience with vehicle, small‑engine, and heavy‑equipment repair.
- Customer service and public‑relations experience.
- Knowledge of natural‑resource management practices and procedures.
- Trail construction and maintenance experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, janitorial, and minor repair skills.
- Knowledge of water‑well repair, solar and electric systems.
- Understanding of park operations and maintenance practices.
- General custodial duties knowledge.
- Basic mathematics skills.
- Proficient with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Quality customer‑service skills in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to perform minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, tractors, vehicles, generators, and other mechanical equipment.
- Heavy‑equipment operation and repair capability.
- Ability to make independent, sound, and timely decisions.
- Knowledge of natural‑resource management practices.
