Department SummaryFacilities is a service organization responsible for the planning, renovation, maintenance, and repair of University buildings and facilities; and the provision of utilities, vehicle rental, refuse collection, custodial and other services essential to the mission of the University of North Texas.
Position OverviewThis position is responsible for providing direction, decision making, scheduling and supervising a medium size group of custodians and their workload. Custodial Supervisors are responsible for the supervision of cleaning and sanitation work in an assigned group of buildings or on special projects. They evaluate worker’s performance and recommend training as needed. The work performance is reviewed and evaluated through the inspection of assigned areas.
Supervisors may be required to work on a relief assignment or a special cleaning crews/projects and perform cleaning duties. Specified duties may vary according to the type of facility to be cleaned. Supervisors are also responsible for completing timekeeping tasks, trainings, and other duties as assigned by the Sr. Facilities Maintenance Manager.
High school diploma/GED equivalent and five years of experience in related maintenance/repair field. Substitution of education for experience allowed. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of methods, practices, tools, materials and supplies used in cleaning, maintaining, repairing and servicing equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the operating principles of related mechanical assemblies.
- Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
- Skill in locating and adjusting defects in equipment.
- Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair.
- Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.
- Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
- Consistently completes expected duties in a timely manner without constant supervision. Accepts responsibility for own work and follows through on commitments.

- Oversees daily operations of custodial personnel as assigned and assists in training employees regarding procedures, techniques, products, and equipment.
- Inspects University buildings for cleanliness, safety and security.
- Monitors inventory and assures that adequate equipment and supplies are on hand. Inspect cleaning equipment and arrange for maintenance and repairs.
- Assists with scheduling for cleaning and for the opening of all University classrooms.
- Approves all time keeping task such as approving time and e-leaves in a timely manner. Completes mid year reviews and yearly performance evaluations of assigned staff.
- Communicating with others to exchange information.
- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
- Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
- Operating machinery and/or power tools.
- Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.
- Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
- Work with toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Noisy environments.
- Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
