Position OverviewThis position is responsible for cleaning and sanitation work throughout the University, including special projects. Those who work an overnight shift may earn additional compensation.
- Sweep, mop, scrub, strip, wax, and buffer floors, hallways, and stairways.
- Vacuum carpets and rugs.
- Dust and clean furniture, walls, ceilings, windows, windowsills, woodwork, and other building surfaces.
- Sanitize rest rooms, baths, commodes, urinals, lavatories, drinking fountains, and other fixtures.
- Remove trash and waste from buildings; clean receptacles; transport recyclables to scheduled drop‑off points.
- Unlock and secure building doors as required.
- Move furniture for cleaning purposes.
- Observe safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
There are no minimum education or experience requirements. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Read and understand labels on chemicals.
- Apply mathematical concepts to complete tasks (e.g., measuring and mixing chemicals).
- Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of cleaning methods and proper use of cleaning equipment.
- Operate vacuum cleaner, floor waxer, floor buffer, and other cleaning equipment.
- Maintain physical ability to stand, stoop, lift materials and equipment, and operate cleaning equipment.
- Recognize and report maintenance needs in buildings.
- Know safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
- Stable employment record.
- Physically able to stand, stoop, operate cleaning equipment, and lift trash and equipment.
- Ensure proper care in the use of custodial equipment and cleaning supplies.
- Maintain custodian closet and cart in a neat and clean manner.
- Remove trash daily, disposing of it in the proper locations.
- Communicate with custodial supervisors daily.
- Report inappropriate actions, injuries, safety issues, and work repairs.
- Follow all departmental cleaning standards provided by supervisory leadership.
- Consistently complete expected duties in a timely manner without constant supervision.

- Maintain a safe and secure work environment.
- Demonstrate punctuality and follow policies for absences, time and attendance.

- Lifting and moving objects up to 20 pounds.
- Move about to accomplish tasks or travel between work sites.
- Operate machinery and/or power tools.
- Perform repetitive motions involving wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
- Noisy environments.
- Work with toxic or caustic chemicals.
