Responsibilities- Perform moderately complex custodial work for assigned locations including office buildings, premises and resident living units.
- Clean, dust, disinfect, and sanitize to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
- Operate floor maintenance equipment such as strippers, buffers, vacuums and extractors.
- Request and restock supplies as necessary.
- Assist in inspections of buildings and equipment for cleanliness and needed repairs.
- Assist in performing minor building and equipment repairs and installations.
- Train other custodians as needed and maintain custodial equipment in good working order.
- Maintain outside areas around buildings and manage trash and debris.
- Perform related duties as assigned and assume duties of other custodians when needed.
- Work under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
- Attend work on a regular basis and follow shift schedules, including rotating schedules and overtime as required by policy.
- May serve in on-call status on a rotating schedule to meet facility needs.
- Provide timely custodial services including sweeping, mopping, dusting and cleaning windows and light fixtures with proper sanitization.
- Clean and maintain floors, restrooms, bedrooms, nurses’ stations and isolation areas per procedures and safety measures.
- Report needed repairs and perform minor maintenance as appropriate.
- Train and coach other custodians and document training conducted.
- Inspect assigned areas for cleanliness, completed work and needed repairs.
- Complete documentation accurately and maintain inventory and equipment records.
- Support residents’ health and provide a safe environment for self, residents and others.
- Participate in disaster response, COOP and other agency obligations as required, which may involve alternate shifts or locations.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards and sanitation regulations.
- Knowledge of infection control principles and methods.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skill in use of custodial equipment, materials and safe handling of chemicals.
- Skill in use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to train others and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand or walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and residents.
- Ability to work irregular hours.
- Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days after hire to drive a state vehicle. Out-of-state driving records require an original certified driving record. Eligibility based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
- One of the following is required:
Graduation from standard senior high school or equivalent;
Paid work experience in any field;
Unpaid housekeeping/custodial service experience. - Preferred:
Six months of custodial or environmental services experience in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel or similar setting.
- Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and LEIE).
- Male applicants 18–25 must be registered with Selective Service.
- All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to random drug testing.
- Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime, weekend and holiday work may be needed.
