The Work Unit:

The operations branch within the Colorado State Public Health Lab (CSPHL) exists to manage building operations, warehouse, supplies, logistics and courier dispatch. The operations branch is also a liaison between the Laboratory programs and external stakeholders. The State Lab is responsible for providing public health laboratory testing services for the state of Colorado. The Facility Operations Department within the CSPHL operates and maintains the Laboratory Facility and campus grounds to include custodial services;

maintenance and repairs, modifications, alterations, preventative maintenance on various mechanical systems and oversight of construction of the State Laboratory. The State Laboratory is a unique facility with federal regulatory requirements governed by the Select Agent Program, Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3), EPA, FDA, ISO 17025 and CLIA regulations.

What You Will Do:

This position monitors the Building Automation System (BAS) and associated control panels to observe facility operations and make necessary adjustments to gauges, valves, and meters to ensure efficient system performance. The role includes visually inspecting machinery to assess operational conditions, identifying malfunctions, and coordinating or performing necessary repairs. The position logs system readings to maintain accurate operational data and performs preventive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and other facility-related systems to support safe, reliable, and efficient building operations.

Additionally, this position analyzes water sample levels for the steam boiler and cooling systems and administers water treatment chemicals to maintain required control limits. These actions are critical to protecting the high-pressure steam boiler system and ensuring the efficiency of the condenser water system supporting mechanical cooling operations. The position also assists with snow removal during winter months to maintain safe facility access.

Mechanical Systems Operator

* Performs preventive maintenance on mechanical system equipment to ensure that all mechanical systems operate safely at optimum efficiency.

* Conducts daily walk-through of all mechanical spaces to visually verify equipment operation. Works with boiler inspectors, electrical inspectors, contractors and vendors.

* Disable and enable Fire/Life safety System and conduct annual fire life safety system inspections to support laboratory needs.

* Ensures inventory and equipment of all items needed are maintained and organized.

* Ensures plumbing, HVAC, steam, and electrical systems are functioning across the building.

* Performs installation, maintenance, and repair of piping systems including domestic water, laboratory gas, compressed air, vacuum, and hydronic heating and cooling systems.

* Diagnoses and repairs issues related to valves, regulators, backflow prev enters, steam traps, and pressure-reducing stations.

* Installs, modifies, and maintains piping systems in compliance with applicable plumbing codes, state regulations, and laboratory safety standards.
