Position: Roadway Maintenance Pro — Outdoor, 4‑Day Week

Highway Maintenance Specialist – Crook, Colorado

Position Overview

No two days are exactly the same. Your daily work activities change based on project needs, weather, environment, and road conditions. You will work on a rotating on‑call schedule and respond to weather emergencies. Typically you will work in a team with a lead specialist and other maintenance specialists.

What You Will Do
  • Plow snow, shovel gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
  • Operate heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, tractors, mowers, and other machinery
  • Mow grass and weeds, remove debris from roadways, culverts, and tunnels
  • Dig ditches, install and repair guardrails, highway markers and signs, warning signs, lighting, and pavement markings/striping
  • Fill potholes and road cracks, set out traffic‑control signs and cones
  • Stop or slow traffic in emergency situations, remove and cover graffiti
  • Perform maintenance on equipment and complete minor repairs
  • Follow safety guidance and wear proper safety equipment

Work Environment
  • Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, dusts, and other chemicals
  • Use of chemicals and cleaning products, respirators, and protective equipment
  • Working near traffic, including high‑speed traffic
  • Use of ladders and scissor lifts (10‑20 ft)
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles
  • Frequent emergency response outside regular hours, including weekends and holidays
  • Must work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and at elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods
Minimum Qualifications

At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience.

Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B without air‑brake restriction for Colorado operation
  • Pass pre‑employment screenings (social security, criminal, educational, and driving records)
  • May be required for drug test and DOT physical
  • On‑call and shift work, including essential services designation
  • May need to live within 30 minutes of a work location
  • Completion of two‑week training for new hires, one‑week yearly training for veterans
  • May need Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6‑12 months
  • Willingness to respond to emergencies outside regular hours, including overtime
  • Maintain telephone contact for emergencies
