GENERAL
SUMMARY:
Prepares, levels and paints surfaces. Performs various carpentry duties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Is able to work in the following fields under general supervision.
* Carpentry - constructs, alters and repairs rafters, walls, doors, paneling, windows, furniture, trim and framing. Refinishes doors, woodwork and furniture with appropriate stain and varnish.
* Painting - applies paint by way of accepted coating methods, including preparation and leveling of surfaces.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
* Moving and storage of furniture - transports furniture and equipment from one location to another without damaging.
* May perform snow removal.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
REQUIRED:
* High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
* Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations
* Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license.
* At least one year carpentry and painting experience.
* Any equivalent background.
* Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training for child and dependent adult abuse within three (3) months of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
* The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: activities occur inside and outside.
* The worker is subject to extreme cold: temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour such as when doing snow removal.
* The worker is subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for period of more than one hour such as when working on external surfaces.
* The worker is subject to noise from power tools, fans, compressors and other loud equipment.
* The worker is subject to vibration from using power tools, working around large equipment and other equipment.
* The worker is subject to hazards such as working with electrical currents, working around moving mechanical parts, climbing on scaffolding, riding on tractors, using chemicals for snow removal, etc.
* The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: chemicals used in cleaning, wood dust and fumes from glues, etc.
VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS:
* Work involves taking measurements, assembling parts at distances close to the eyes and inspecting work.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: (Constant = 67-100% of workday, Frequent = 34- 66% of workday, Occasional = 33% or less of workday)

* Reaching:
Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction while using power or hand tools, reaching to work on equipment, etc.
* Grasping:
Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm, such as holding on to tools - screw drivers, drills, hammers, power tools, etc.
* Repetitive Motions:
Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers, such as turning screw drivers, using sanders, painting.
* Standing:
Particularly for sustained periods of time. When doing painting or working on finished projects.
* Pushing/Pulling:
Using upper extremities to press against something to force forward or backward, such as sanding, running lumber through saw.
FREQUENT
* Kneeling:
Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees, such as when painting.
* Walking:
Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances. Carrying tools and equipment back and forth, getting around buildings.
* Lifting:
Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. When moving furniture, material or equipment from one location to another.
* Climbing:
Ascending to descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
OCCASIONAL
* Feeling:
Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. As when checking smoothness or finishes or lumber, wall temperatures or equipment or dampness.
* Talking:
Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other words accurately, loudly, or quickly.
* Hearing:
Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal range and being able to make find discriminations in sounds.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 40 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with employees, residence and visitors and satisfactory job performance despite the stress of a hospital work environment.
