Operations Engineer Chief, Class 4

Serve as lead custodial staff in assigned facilities. Responsibilities may include coordinating staff schedule; maintaining inventories and supplies; conducting basic building safety inspections; providing maintenance and repair to equipment and building facilities; and performing custodial duties. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific positions requirements will vary depending on the need operations department.

The Operations Engineer Chief directs the work of the custodial employees in the building and assures the performance of cleaning assignments, building maintenance, and safety requirements.

Essential functions:

  • Assure cleanliness inside and outside the building/complex.
  • Order and manage sufficient supplies to properly maintain facility.
  • Assist custodial specialist to ensure that preventive maintenance objectives are achieved.
  • Assist custodial specialist in the preparation of work schedules for staff.
  • Perform tasks as assigned by the building administration in order to meet the unique needs of the building and its occupants.
  • Assist the director of custodial services and custodial specialists in the annual performance evaluation of subordinate employees.
  • Perform all cleaning tasks required to maintain the facility.
  • Communicate with operations staff to ensure the facility is properly heated, ventilated and maintained during night or day activities.
  • Provide leadership to ensure facility is secured each night to prevent loss of or damage to property, or failure of mechanical equipment.
  • Carry out all policies and procedures as set forth for building personnel in operations.
  • Additional essential functions (for every DMPS position):

  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.

  • Physical requirements:

    constant standing and walking. Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs and carrying up to 10 ft. Frequent use of telephone and computer.

    Working conditions:

    frequent inside, outside, and exposure to extremes of temperature/humidity

    • Evaluation: composite score of "meets" or better on the most recent evaluation. All staff must have one evaluation on file. If no evaluation is on file by the end of the previous academic year, it will be considered a meets evaluation.
    • Discipline: no formal discipline during the past 12 months from the posting date for all employees.
    • Seniority: if two or more employees have relatively equal qualifications, the employee with greater seniority within the department or classification (depending on the position) will be given first consideration. Exceptions regarding department or classification seniority will be considered by the Director of Personnel.
