The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is seeking a dependable and skilled
Maintenance Technician to support maintenance and repair needs across ARL locations. This role helps ensure our buildings, equipment, vehicles, and work spaces remain safe, functional, and prepared to support the animals, staff, volunteers, and community members who depend on us every day.
This is a great opportunity for someone with facilities, maintenance, repair, construction, equipment operation, safety, or related hands-on experience who enjoys solving problems, responding to operational needs, and supporting a mission-driven organization through practical, behind-the-scenes work.
Schedule- Monday through Friday
- 40 hours, typically between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
- Schedule may include weekdays, weekends, holidays, and varying shifts based on facilities, maintenance, and operational needs.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is Iowa’s largest nonprofit animal welfare organization, helping animals and the people who love them through sheltering, adoption, veterinary care, animal services, community programs, and pet support resources.
Across multiple locations and programs in the Des Moines metro, the ARL works every day to provide compassionate care, practical support, and trusted resources for animals and families in our community.
What You’ll Do- Perform maintenance and repair of buildings, vehicles, equipment, and facilities across ARL locations.
- Respond promptly to repair requests to help ensure staff have safe, functional equipment and work spaces.
- Support preventative and predictive maintenance practices.
- Collaborate with departments and supervisors to maintain clean, safe, and functional building conditions.
- Follow OSHA safety guidelines and help foster a culture of safety across the organization.
- Assist with grounds, exercise areas, sidewalks, walking areas, and related maintenance needs when needed.
- Collaborate with the Grounds & Crematory team and step in to support essential work as needed.
- Operate construction or maintenance-related equipment safely and appropriately.
- Follow ARL policies, procedures, safety standards, and operational expectations.
- Communicate professionally with staff, supervisors, contractors, and other team members.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- At least two years of related work experience required.
- Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record required.
- Experience with facilities maintenance, repairs, construction, equipment operation, or related work.
- Demonstrated experience with preventative and predictive maintenance practices.
- Understanding of workplace safety, risk analysis, and facilities-related safety practices.
- Knowledge of electrical safety protocols.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to resolve concerns professionally and work effectively with multiple departments.
- Ability to function in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment.
- Basic math skills and attention to detail.
- Initiative, adaptability, and the ability to work independently.
