Oakton College is seeking adjunct instructors for chemistry courses to provide part-time teaching support across its campuses.
Job DescriptionPart‑time faculty are paid on a lecture hour equivalent (LHE) basis. For most courses the LHE is equal to a credit hour; for others it represents additional work such as grading or laboratory instruction. 2025‑26 rates are $1221/LHE for faculty without doctorates and $1294/LHE for faculty with doctorates. Faculty can advance one salary step after successfully teaching two fall or spring semesters with at least three LHEs each.
Assignments are conditioned on sufficient enrollment, and once a course starts the faculty member is expected to complete the course. Courses are assigned to faculty who are fully qualified by education, training, and experience, and who have a history of successful performance at Oakton.
Essential Functions of the Position- Construct a course syllabus consistent with the generic syllabus, detailing course objectives, content, and grading criteria.
- Prepare instructional materials for lectures, laboratories, and clinical functions as appropriate.
- Deliver instruction and meet course and laboratory requirements at scheduled times.
- Consult with and evaluate students.
- Maintain clear records of student performance and attendance for grading.
- Comply with departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including submission of grades, office hours, and instructional decisions; adhere to the AFA contract and institutional procedures.
- Generalist Chemistry (CHM 101, 105, 121, 122, 240)
Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field with at least 18 graduate hours in chemistry; or Master’s degree in chemistry education with 18 graduate hours in chemistry. - Preferred:
College teaching experience;
Doctoral degree in chemistry or related field with 18 graduate hours in chemistry. - Organic Chemistry (CHM 207, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, 226, 227, 228)
Master’s degree in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a related field with 18 graduate hours in organic chemistry. - Preferred:
College teaching experience;
Doctoral degree in organic chemistry or related field with 18 graduate hours in organic chemistry. - Strong communication skills and effective classroom facilitation in a student‑centered environment.
