Job Description
Applicants must be strong communicators and effective classroom facilitators who enjoy teaching in a student‑centered environment. Oakton values candidates committed to working in a culturally competent setting and seeks faculty who are passionate about innovation in college‑level teaching, including non‑traditional delivery of instruction. Faculty are expected to be professionally competent, exhibit strong leadership qualities, participate in professional development activities, and engage in institutional and departmental service.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Construct a course syllabus for each course assigned, consistent with the generic course syllabus, specifying course objectives, content, and grading criteria.
- Prepare course presentations and instructional materials using active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies; deliver instruction to students with those presentations and materials at each class session delivered in person on campus or online.
- Meet with courses and laboratories at scheduled times.
- Instruct, advise, consult with, and evaluate the performance of enrolled students.
- Maintain clear records on student performance and participate in the evaluation and grading of student performance.
- Participate in department meetings and comply with department decisions regarding instructional matters.
- Participate in department and institutional assessments of student learning and in department and institutional surveys.
- Comply with institutional procedures.
- Attend and participate in divisional meetings, committee, taskforce, and other institutional organization meetings as assigned.
- Schedule office hours with at least one office hour held weekly for every three credit hours taught.
- Engage in professional development activities to maintain professional skills and currency in the profession and improve the quality of student learning.
- One year of automotive work experience and either an AAS in Automotive Technology or a related vocational/technical field or a certificate in Automotive Technology.
- Relevant industry certifications and a Bachelor's degree are preferred.
- Part‑time faculty are paid on a lecture hour equivalents (LHE) basis. For most courses, the LHE is the same as a credit hour; for courses with additional work such as grading or laboratory instruction, the LHE may be higher.
- For the 2024‑25 academic year rates are $1,191/LHE for faculty without doctorates and $1,262/LHE for faculty with doctorates.
- Part‑time faculty advance one step within the salary schedule with the successful completion of two fall & spring semesters where 3+ LHEs are taught in each semester.
- Part‑time faculty are hired on a semester‑by‑semester basis and assignments are conditioned on sufficient enrollment. Once a course starts, the faculty member is expected to complete the course.
