Job Overview
This Electronics Engineer role will support the NISC IV program as a project engineer responsible for planning and design activities for FAA facility modernization and telecommunication projects. The position involves developing project plans, schedules, cost estimates, drawings, specifications and risk management documents in coordination with technical operations and air traffic stakeholders. It is an in‑office role located in Des Plaines, IL with a 30 % travel requirement.
PrimaryDuties and Responsibilities
- Perform on‑site surveys and develop to‑scale designs.
- Generate sketches showing installation relationships with exact specifications and dimensions.
- Participate in construction pre‑inspections and final inspections.
- Confer with engineering staff to identify and resolve design or implementation problems.
- Coordinate design components with multidisciplinary teams for site‑specific modifications and new construction.
- Prepare and review AutoCAD construction drawings, site‑specific specifications, contract documents and independent cost estimates.
- Perform project management tasks and communications, including safety plans, sequence of work and cutover plans.
- Generate and coordinate risk management checklists, communication plans and risk registers to meet operational risk requirements.
- Coordinate and complete work permits required for potential lead and asbestos impacts during construction.
- Participate in pre‑construction and on‑site construction meetings with stakeholders.
- Plan, schedule and coordinate construction activities to meet milestones and deadlines.
- Manage on‑site cutovers, testing and restoration of facilities.
- Prepare, maintain and provide periodic project updates to team, management and stakeholders.
- Perform internal design reviews of FAA engineering projects.
- Track and reconcile joint and contractor acceptance inspections and recommend resolutions.
- Review project deliverables and communicate findings verbally and in writing.
- Conduct circuit analysis on new and existing equipment.
- Electronics or Electrical Engineering degree with 4–8 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s with 2–6 years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and engineering scheduling tools.
- Proficient in AutoCAD or Micro Station.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to produce clear technical writing and coordinate with stakeholders, peers and management.
- Ability to maintain an electronic project folder for site preparation and equipment installation problems.
- Working knowledge of telecommunication technology.
- Capability to provide technical assistance and recommendations for construction punch‑list closures.
- Strong independent work ethic in a large engineering organization.
- Basic knowledge of multiple disciplines and their typical project requirements.
- Experience discussing project items with stakeholders, contractors and authorities having jurisdiction.
Ability to work in a fast‑paced team environment. - Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance and pass a drug screening.
- Knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association standards, and NAS facilities such as ASR, ATCT, VOR, ARSR, RCAG.
- Knowledge of OSHA and general construction and electrical safety standards.
- Experience with Corporate Work Plan (CWP) 4.1.12.
