Job Overview
Diesel Fleet Mechanic Technician II – Sysco, Des Plaines, IL. The role focuses on providing safe, reliable, and cost-efficient vehicles by performing preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs to reduce downtime and improve fleet reliability.
Compensation and Benefits- Pay: $25.24 – $37.84 per hour (based on experience)
- Sign‑on Bonus: up to $7,500 for new hires
- Night Shift Differential: $2.00 per hour
- Uniforms Paid for: $600.00 annual boot and tool allowance
- Training: OEM, Thermo King, EPA, and additional training provided

- Day Shift: 3‑day work week (Thursday – Saturday)
- Day Shift: 4‑day work week (Wednesday – Saturday)
- Perform required inspections and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment within planned time tolerances.
- Perform FAI/CVI (Annual) inspections on all fleet vehicles in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Perform quality preventive maintenance inspections and repairs on tractors, trailers, converter dollies, lift‑gates, and light‑duty vehicles.
- Address all Driver Vehicle Inspection Report write‑ups timely and efficiently.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical systems, including engines, transmissions, clutches, drive‑line, differential, steering, suspension, fuel, ignition, exhaust, intake, electrical, brake, HVAC, lift‑gate hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
- Document all work performed on work orders.
- Education:
Medium / Heavy Duty truck technical training; high school diploma or GED required. - Experience:
2‑year school and 1 year of fleet maintenance and repair experience, or 3 years of experience. - Valid driver’s license.
- Annual Inspector Certification, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
- Brake Inspector Certification.
- ASE certifications – Automotive or Medium/Heavy Duty Trucks (preferred).
- 609 HVAC Certification.
- Proficient in electrical meter testing and basic welding (gas, electric, MIG, TIG).
- Experience with computer‑based diagnostic software for OEMs and component manufacturers.
- Own tools with diagnostic equipment; major tools provided by Sysco.
- Expert knowledge of all vehicle systems and components.
- Moderate knowledge of electrical systems and preventive maintenance.
- Basic knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
- Regular sitting, standing, walking, and use of hands and fingers for mechanical tasks and computer use.
- Frequent lifting and moving of up to 100 lbs.
- Requires standing, walking, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, and grasping tools.
- Exposure to wet, hot, extreme cold, and humid conditions; working with moving mechanical parts.
- Work in confined spaces; exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
- Unpredictable hours: evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on‑call duties.
