Job SummaryThe Transitional Counselor position at Maryville Academy involves providing direct service to Transitional IDJJ Program youth in a residential setting. The counselor will work towards reducing aggressive behavior, criminal activity, and mental health symptoms while helping youth develop life skills and prepare for community reintegration.
Responsibilities- Implement restorative justice principles in interactions with youth
- Supervise and support youth using trauma-informed care techniques
- Assist youth in developing coping strategies and life skills
- Encourage engagement in the treatment process and promote positive attitudes
- Document treatment records and reports accurately and promptly
- Monitor medication self-administration when necessary
- Lead structured programs, recreation, and social activities for youth
- Conduct crisis interventions using Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) techniques
- Participate in meetings and provide clinical input for programming and client care
- Facilitate group counseling and skills training sessions
- Collaborate effectively within the treatment team
Education/
Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field preferred; OR
- Bachelor's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, social work, education, psychology, or related field; OR
- Bachelor's degree in any other field with 2 years of supervised clinical experience in mental health; OR
- High School Diploma with a minimum of 5 years of work with children with behavioral and mental health issues
Skills/Knowledge:
- Ability to maintain healthy boundaries
- Proficient in de-escalating situations and managing groups
- Possess a valid Driver’s License and ability to transport youth
- Comfortable with computer use for documentation and communication
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
Physical Demands:
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift/move objects, and provide physical restraint
- Visual, hearing, and learning capabilities necessary for job functions
Environment and Scheduling:
- Flexible availability for evening and weekend shifts
- Comfortable working in various program settings, including those with potentially hostile or challenging conditions
