Assistant Engineering Manager
The Assistant Engineering Manager is responsible for supporting the Engineering Manager in overseeing the daily operations, mechanical maintenance, and repair of facility systems at Comerica Park. This includes HVAC, plumbing, boilers, chillers, air handlers, and other mechanical infrastructure. The role provides leadership to the maintenance team, ensures efficient and safe facility operations, coordinates preventative and corrective maintenance, manages contractors, and drives continuous improvement while complying with all applicable codes, standards, and safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities:- Assist the Engineering Manager in planning, organizing, and directing the mechanical maintenance program, including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC units, plumbing systems, pumps, motors, boilers, chillers, air handlers, and other facility equipment.
- Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate HVAC Technicians and other maintenance staff; assign work orders, monitor progress, and ensure timely completion of tasks.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, schematics, and building drawings to determine maintenance requirements and scope of work.
- Oversee the completion of mechanical service requests and emergency repairs, ensuring compliance with OSHA, local building codes, and safety standards.
- Participate in and help coordinate the on-call emergency rotation; respond to urgent mechanical issues as needed and lead response efforts.
- Monitor and optimize the performance of mechanical systems; implement operational techniques and efficiency improvements to reduce downtime and energy consumption.
- Manage the safekeeping, inventory, and proper stocking of mechanical tools, equipment, supplies, and spare parts; conduct regular audits of mechanical rooms, workshops, and storage areas.
- Document all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS); generate reports for management review.
- Collaborate with external contractors and vendors; provide technical input, oversee work quality, and ensure seamless integration with facility operations.
- Conduct full-building quality assurance checks, lead or participate in inspections with third-party supervisors, prioritize tasks, and communicate findings and recommendations to the Engineering Manager.
- Report irregularities, equipment damage, safety concerns, or discrepancies promptly; assist in developing corrective action plans.
- Support budget management by tracking maintenance expenses, recommending purchases, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
- Ensure adherence to all safety protocols and promote a culture of safety within the team.
- Perform hands-on maintenance and repairs as needed to support the team during peak periods or emergencies.

Perform additional duties as assigned. Participate in facility planning, capital improvement projects, and event-related mechanical preparations.
While performing the duties of this job, the colleague is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle tools and equipment; reach with hands and arms; and communicate effectively. The colleague frequently climbs ladders or balances on elevated platforms. The colleague occasionally stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. The colleague must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with assistance.
Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The colleague must work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including mechanical rooms with exposure to varying temperatures.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required, associate or bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field preferred. Minimum seven (7) years of progressive experience in mechanical maintenance (HVAC, plumbing, and related systems), with at least two (2) years in a supervisory or lead role.
