Facilities Assistant

Schedule Expectations:Standard daytime schedule; occasional evening or weekend availability required to support events and emergency needs.

Pay:$16-$18 hour

Pewabic Pottery is a 123-year-old arts anchor institution on Detroit's evolving east side, home to a National Historic Landmark building, a working ceramics studio, gallery and retail space, classrooms, gardens, and event spaces. Pewabic is seeking a dependable, hands-on Part-Time Facilities Assistant for a long-term role to help maintain the campus's buildings and grounds, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for staff, students, visitors, and donors.

The Facilities Assistant supports the day-to-day upkeep and light repair of Pewabic's historic campus, working both indoors and outdoors across the studio, gallery, classroom, office, and grounds. This role works closely with the Facilities Supervisor on general handyman tasks, painting, landscaping, and routine maintenance. This is a hands-on, long-term position well suited to someone who is reliable, versatile, and comfortable with physical work in all conditions.

• Perform general handyman tasks and routine maintenance and minor repairs across the buildings, studio, and grounds.
• Report larger issues or repair needs to the Facilities Manager.

• Perform interior and exterior painting and touch-up work as needed.

• Maintain outdoor grounds, gardens, and walkways, including seasonal upkeep (mowing, weeding, leaf/debris clearing, snow removal).
• Support upkeep of the building's exterior and grounds appearance.

• Assist with general cleaning and upkeep of studio, gallery, classroom, and office spaces.
• Help set up and break down spaces for classes, exhibitions, and events as needed.
• Work closely with the Facilities Supervisor and other staff to anticipate and respond to facility needs across the campus.

• General handyman knowledge (basic carpentry, and repair skills).
• Painting experience.
• Landscaping/grounds-keeping experience.
• Ability to lift 40-50 lbs.
• Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Experience maintaining a historic building or museum/cultural facility.
• Experience supporting event setup/breakdown in a public-facing venue.

• Regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing.
• Ability to lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
• Work performed both indoors and outdoors, including exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
• Occasional evening or weekend availability for events or facility needs.
