Education and Related

Work Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required. Experience in a custodian role focused on building upkeep and with great physical endurance to cover a large space.

Technical Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of minor repair techniques and building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate industrial cleaning equipment and maintain it.
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies and safely dispose of chemical liquids and other hazardous materials.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and management.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education and Superintendent policies, and building and department regulations.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety, follow rules, practice safe work habits, use appropriate safety equipment, and report unsafe conditions.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Exercise professional judgment in absences, be punctual to work, meetings, and appointments, and perform other duties as assigned.

Follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Cleaning – Assist to:
  • Implement and maintain a scheduled cleaning program for floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, and equipment.
  • Keep the school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and orderly.
  • Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and order additional supplies as needed.
Maintenance and Repair – Assist to:
  • Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs.
  • Regulate heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical use of fuel and water.
  • Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Move furniture or equipment within the building as directed by supervisors.
  • Operate mechanical and electrical tools necessary to complete work.
Safety – Assist to:
  • Assume responsibility for opening and closing the building each school day.
  • Oversee procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding the facility.
  • Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and panic bolts are functional during operation hours.
  • Inspect machines and equipment for safety compliance.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow safety procedures and techniques, such as proper lifting, climbing, and stooping, to reduce injury risk.
  • Report unsafe conditions that cannot be corrected to supervisors.
  • Maintain personal appearance and wear assigned uniform and non‑slip footwear.
Other Duties
  • Wear district employee  at all times within the district.
  • Foster a team environment by assisting coworkers with scheduled work.
  • Exercise professional judgment regarding absences and practice punctuality at work, meetings, and appointments.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Director, Principal, Campus Administrator, or Department.
  • Adhere to Donna ISD Employee Standards of Conduct and Code of Ethics.

Language / Mathematical / Reading

Skills:

Ability to read and understand instructions, interpret safety rules, and write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to perform basic arithmetic and understand volume and weight measurements.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment: Work involves light to moderate physical activity, including walking, standing, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The environment includes exposure to temperatures, dust, chemicals, and moderate noise. Employees must maintain emotional control under stress.

Employees understand that the district will not be responsible for transportation to assigned locations and that the employee must maintain their own transportation.
