Position Overview
Second shift assignment during the school year; first shift during winter and summer break.
Hourly rate: $23.64, plus $0.50 night rate.
General Characteristics, Qualifications, and Experience- Ability to be on time daily unless using an approved absence.
- Ability to follow specific oral and/or written instructions about daily assignments.
- Ability to keep records of cleaning and maintenance tasks performed.
- Ability to interact in a satisfactory manner with students, teachers, principals, visitors, and co‑workers.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, principals, teachers, and visitors through both oral and written means.
- Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects or operate heavy equipment.
- Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and temperature ranges.
- Ability to work with several aerial devices including ladders, scaffolding, and lifts.
- Knowledge of chemicals, materials, equipment, and methods employed in building cleaning operation and minor maintenance tasks.
- Knowledge of computers and applications such as Word, Excel, email programs and other office productivity software utilized by the department.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude while following District and department policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
- Unlock and lock buildings and/or rooms as needed to perform work.
- Floors – wet mop using 24 oz. size mop head; operate scrubbing machines, shampooing machines, carpet rinsing machines, wet/dry vacuum, and vacuums 24" or larger.
- Move, clean, and/or conduct minor repairs on building furnishings.
- Set up for programs and special events.
- Wash ceilings, walls, light fixtures, woodwork, mirrors, cabinets, lockers, shades, and blinds; replace lighting lamps.
- Groundwork – raise and lower flag as necessary; assist in snow removal by operating snow blowers, shovels snow, sanding or salting; operate grass mowers, trim grass and hedges; litter cleanup.
- Load and unload stores, school equipment and supplies; remove trash and garbage from building to outside waste containers and clean same.
- Load and unload hot lunch totes.
- Operate and clean boilers and heating/ventilating equipment, as well as perform minor repair work.
- In buildings with the following facilities the custodian may be responsible for: operation of laundry, cleaning and operation of pool, cleaning, and operation of field watering systems; marking of athletic fields. The pool work may require passing a CPO certification class.
- Responsible for security and fire safety of building and report all safety and maintenance concerns to supervisors.
- Be available for situations such as emergencies and storm damage, vandalism, break‑ins, overtime hours for weekend and after‑school activities.
- May be asked to supervise persons in different and other categories in the absence of the Assistant Head Custodian and/or Head Custodian; temporarily replace Assistant Head Custodian or Head Custodian as may be required.
- Performs duties of persons in different and other categories as may be necessary.
- Provides sanitation and maintenance of floors including dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming scrubbing, and refinishing.
- Provides access and equipment to building for parents, permit holders, teachers, and students after school hours according to work shift.
- Be an appropriate role model for students.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Evaluations will be done as negotiated in the contract.

Contract:
Twelve months. - Hours of Work:
Current schedule is Monday – Friday 2:15 pm – 10:45 pm for elementary and middle schools and 3:00 pm – 11:30 pm for high schools. Hours may be adjusted by the Manager and/or Assistant Manager of Buildings and Grounds to meet building and/or district needs. - Hours are typically changed to 7:00 am – 3:30 pm for 8 weeks during the summer break.
- Additional (overtime) hours may be required to fill in for persons not reporting and/or for extra activities in the building after school or on weekends.
