Seasonal Craft Operator

Summary

This position is located in a National Park Service Unit. The primary purpose of this position is the operation of small oar, sail or mechanically propelled craft, generally under 55 meters (180 feet) in length used to transport cargo and personnel, conduct tows, and participate in resource management and protection patrols and search and rescue operations.

• Operate sightseeing trips ranging from 20 to 70 miles (round trip) on large open surface lake areas, using engine power and rudder controls to maneuver the vessel near docks, secure anchor lines, and ensure safe operations.
• Lead and instruct deck hands in safe docking, passenger loading, navigation, and underway procedures.
• Perform daily checks, cleaning, and minor maintenance on the vessel, outboard motor, and onboard safety equipment, and report maintenance and repair needs in a timely manner to the park's senior Interpretive Specialist.
• Assist maintenance employees as needed to meet program objectives, performing carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and custodial services less than 30% of the time.
• Serve as a work leader for a deck hand when assigned to assist in boating operations.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

• U.S. citizenship required; appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
• Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
• Must physically accept a drug test and maintain a negative result; position subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
• May be required to operate a government or private motor vehicle; must possess a current valid state‑issued driver’s license, submit a copy annually, and provide all driving records upon request.
• Uniform is required; must comply with National Park Service uniform standards and will receive a uniform allowance.
