Maintenance Assistant

  • Ensures Y is attractive and clean by completing all duties listed on the daily schedule and maintains upkeep of assigned area and equipment.
  • Must have hands on experience working in general maintenance (carpentry, electrical, drywall, painting, HVAC etc.)
  • Works with Building Services Director on snow removal and grounds keeping.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment with proven skills.
  • Records and reports all needed repairs; repairs facility and property as directed.
  • Ensures YMCA building and property is secure during shift and report incidents and hazardous conditions to supervisor.
  • Replaces soap, paper towels, and other supplies.
  • Safely operates motorized equipment.
  • Provide support and coverage for building services operations as needed across YMCA branch locations during events, staff vacations, emergencies, or periods of turnover to ensure continuity of facility maintenance and safety standards.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning and repair methods.

There are no supervisory responsibilities for the Maintenance Assistant.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:
    • Frequently required to: climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for an extended period of time, climb ladders, walk, shovel snow, plow snow
    • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds from floor to waist, waist to head and above head
    • Occasionally push/pull 50 pounds back and forth
    • Always have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and have visual acuity.
  • The work is performed both indoors and outside and may require travel to various locations.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.

The Maintenance Assistant will work part-time hours and be available during the day to assist in projects around the different Lake Superior YMCA properties. This position will be split between the Downtown Duluth, the Essentia Wellness Center, and the Superior Branches.

  • Required certifications: CPR, AED, First Aid, and CPO training can be provided and must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a maintenance role
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment.
  • Basic understanding of the upkeep and care of equipment.
  • Experience working with paint, cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms.
  • Ability to work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
  • Experience operating motorized equipment.
