Job Summary

Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor and/or Assistant Custodial Supervisor, the Custodian is responsible for performing general cleaning within assigned areas, hallways, restrooms, gyms, locker rooms, cafeterias, and school areas in accordance with cleaning schedules and work assignments in providing a safe, clean learning environment for students, staff, and faculty. The Custodian assists in the set up and tear down in preparation for building events, evening activities or classes within the building as assigned by the Custodial Supervisor, Assistant Custodial Supervisor, or building administrator.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sanitizes and cleans restrooms in accordance with established assignments and cleaning schedules.
    • Scrubs and sanitizes sinks, countertops, door handles, faucets, toilet flush handles, soap and paper dispenser handles.
    • Cleans, polishes and rinses chrome fixtures.
    • Cleans and sanitizes toilet stools and urinals and makes sure they are operating properly.
    • Cleans mirrors and window ledges.
    • Scrubs and sanitizes restroom floors.
    • Refills paper goods, soap dispensers and sprays deodorizers.
  • Provides cleaning services for classrooms, offices, cafeteria, kitchens, hallways, locker rooms, gymnasium, and all areas required in school building.
    • Sweeps, vacuums and/or mops floors and hallways daily. Cleans hallways, entryways, restrooms, classrooms or cafeteria.
    • Dust mops or wet mops rooms and floors and classrooms, as necessary.
    • Empties waste baskets and recycle baskets.
    • Scrubs soap and towel dispensers and countertops.
    • Sanitizes countertops, sinks, chairs, and desks.
    • Cleans glass windows on doors daily.
    • Cleans gymnasiums.
    • Vacuums carpets and entry mats.
    • Cleans and disinfects spills and stains as required.
    • Cleans hallways, entryways, restrooms, locker rooms, classrooms or cafeteria.
    • Strips, mops, waxes, buffs and cleans floors.
    • Clears snow and ice from entryways, as needed.
    • Cleans locker rooms. Sweeps floors, sanitizes floors and shower areas.
    • Mops, scrubs, sanitizes and cleans kitchen areas.
  • Provides assistance in unloading deliveries and/or food items to the building and in moving desks, furniture, and equipment within the building, as assigned.
  • Secures and/or opens buildings. Shuts off lights, closes windows, and locks doors. Opens and locks doors for extracurricular and community education or other scheduled activities.
  • Assists with the set up and take down of equipment and materials needed for scheduling building activities, meetings, events or functions within the building. Cleans areas upon the conclusion of events and scheduled activities.
  • Removes garbage and recycling from classrooms, offices and common areas to the district’s garbage and recycling dumpsters.
  • Participates in extensive summer cleaning schedules, routines and projects in building in preparations for the new year.
    • Removes furniture from all classrooms; cleans sinks; washes walls and windows; strips, seals, and waxes floors.
    • Cleans lockers.
    • Shampoos all carpets.
    • Paints classrooms or other major cleaning and maintenance as needed.
    • Fixes and repairs lockers, doors, and shelves.
    • Assists in moving classroom furniture or moving offices.
  • Answers calls from building personnel for general and/or routine repairs or maintenance assistance (e.g. plumbing, furniture, locker repairs, spills, etc.) Performs minor repair and maintenance activities as needed. Informs Custodial Supervisor or Assistant Custodial Supervisor of more involved or timely repairs within building.
  • Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Requires a minimum of a High School Diploma and a safe driving record. Requires a valid MN Driver’s License.
