Building Maintenance Helper
Are you skilled in performing building maintenance work? Come put your expertise to use at the St. Louis County Jail in Duluth, MN. Please note, the schedule for this position is as follows:
Monday - Friday, 4:00 pm - 12:00 am Employees working a regular shift commencing between the hours of 2:00 pm and 10:00 pm shall, in addition to their hourly pay, receive a shift differential equal to $.90 per hour. The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2026. The full salary range, including longevity pay for Building Maintenance Helper is $25.48 - $35.46 per hour.
The full salary range, including longevity pay for Building Maintenance Worker is $28.19 - $39.56 per hour. This position is part of the Civil Service Basic Unit Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement represented by Council 5 of AFSCME. St. Louis County does not participate in E-Verify. All employees must be continuously authorized to work in the United States for St. Louis County, on a full-time basis.

An employee in this class assists in performing a variety of installation and repair work required to maintain the mechanical, electrical and structural components of County facilities. Duties include assisting in maintaining plumbing, heating and ventilation systems and fixtures; and preventive maintenance and repair. The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE HELPER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Pass/Fail):
- One (1) year full-time paid verifiable experience in the maintenance and repair of multi-unit, commercial, industrial or institutional buildings; or three (3) years as a General Maintenance Worker.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
Note:
Upon completion of two consecutive, full-time years of service as a Building Maintenance Helper; a satisfactory performance rating in the most recent rating period; and recommendation of the department head, the employee shall be authorized promotion to the Building Maintenance Worker classification.
BUILDING MAINTENANCE WORKER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Pass/Fail):
- Four (4) years full-time paid verifiable experience in the maintenance and repair of multi-unit, commercial/industrial or institutional buildings, including building management systems.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of appropriate level operating engineer's license as determined by the psi and horsepower ratings of the boiler(s) in assigned County facility in which the vacancy exists.
Note:
At the discretion of the hiring authority, the successful candidate may be considered for appointment at the Building Maintenance Worker level, contingent on minimum qualifications and department need. This would be determined at the time a job offer is extended.
RATING SYSTEM:
Supplemental questionnaire will be 100% of the scoring process:
- Points will be awarded based on the applicants answers to supplemental questions 10-14.
- Experience beyond ten years may be included on the application for purposes of meeting minimum qualifications or informing the hiring authority of your complete employment history.
TENTATIVE RECRUITMENT & SCREENING PROCESS
SCHEDULE:
- September 3, 2026 - Applicant screening will begin
- The week of September 21, 2026 - Supplemental question scoring to be completed
- The week of October 5, 2026 - Interviews to be conducted
