General Definition of Work
Performs responsible semiskilled and unskilled work in a variety of General Maintenance, building and grounds maintenance assignments; does related work as assigned. Performs any other duties assigned. Work is performed under regular supervision. Limited supervision may be exercised over assigned personnel.
Essential Functions / Typical Tasks- Basic knowledge of General Maintenance, Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, HVAC, etc.
- Keeps track of supplies needed for maintaining the appearance of County buildings.
- Gathers and disposes of refuse, litter, and trash; empties wastebaskets.
- Mows and trims grass with power mowers and string trimmers; prunes shrubbery; edges curbs and walkways; weeds flower beds; picks up and disposes of debris.
- Remove trash from buildings: picks up trash and debris on buildings grounds.
- Ability to operate pressure washing equipment.
- Performs minor maintenance and repair tasks on interior and exterior of buildings including patching leaking roofs, fixing broken bathroom fixtures, etc.
- Replaces interior and exterior light bulbs; replaces ceiling tiles.
- Inspects fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
- Transports supplies to work sites.
- Performs related tasks as required.
- Performs any other duties assigned.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and a minimum of 1 year experience in general maintenance, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, and/or grounds maintenance work.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of building maintenance and cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently; general knowledge of the use of common power tools and how to operate safely and effectively; ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates; ability to read and write; physical ability to perform heavy manual work;
ability to work independently.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work regularly requires stooping, crouching, standing, and walking; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels;
visual acuity is required for the use of measuring devices and operation of motor vehicles or equipment. The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.
