Job DescriptionUtility Maintenance Worker – Operations
In this role, you will maintain and repair the City’s water distribution, sanitary collection, and storm conveyance systems. You will inspect and operate the infrastructure, maintain records, and provide exceptional customer service while ensuring the utilities run smoothly. Essential Position Functions- Inspect, operate, and maintain City utility infrastructure (water distribution, sanitary collection, storm conveyance).
- Enter, review, and maintain inspection, maintenance, and repair records; interpret and update as‑built and location plan information.
- Provide positive customer service while troubleshooting utility systems for residents and businesses.
- Assist internal departments as directed by Utility Supervisors.
- Leverage technology daily to gather and record information (email, smartphone, text, SCADA, GIS, GPS, work‑management applications).
- Respond to emergency callouts after scheduled work hours and perform corrective work as required (at least once every 12 weeks).
- Adhere to and implement all safety rules, regulations and practices.
- Promote and maintain good relationships between coworkers, supervisors and the general public.
- Work with or for other Public Works divisions as assigned, including snowplowing and other maintenance activities.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid Class D or higher driver’s license.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire.
- Valid Class D Water Operator Certificate within 18 months of hire.
- Ability to perform essential position functions and meet physical requirements, including handling weights up to 70 pounds.
- Associate’s degree or diploma in Water Environmental Technologies or a closely related field.
- Valid Minnesota Class C or higher Water Operator license.
- Valid Minnesota Class SC or higher Wastewater Operator license.
- Valid Minnesota Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements.
- Three years of experience in operation and maintenance of water treatment, distribution, wastewater, or storm conveyance systems.
- Three years of experience with SCADA, CMMS, and/or GIS in the operation of a Minnesota Class B or Class A water treatment, distribution, wastewater or storm conveyance system.
Normal 40+ hour work week Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; may be required to work extended hours, standby duties, and pager assignments. 100% field work.
Physical Requirements- 8‑hour day activities: sit 2‑4 hours, stand 2‑3 hours, walk 4‑5 hours.
- Handle weights up to 70 lbs. Use coworker assistance or mechanical devices for heavy or large items.
- Drive trucks and heavy equipment; climb to heights up to 200 feet and descend to depths up to 100 feet.
