The Town of East Hartford is looking for enthusiastic, full‑time Maintainer II professionals to become part of our Department of Public Works in the Parks and Highway Divisions. In this role, you’ll work outdoors in all seasons, helping to keep our community safe, beautiful, and well‑maintained. Your efforts will make a real difference in preserving the town’s infrastructure and public spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Positions work in all types of weather conditions. The Town of East Hartford does conduct random drug screenings as mandated by the Department of Transportation. Skill testing may be conducted as part of the hiring process. This position does not offer remote duties of any nature. Mandatory overtime required for snow removal and emergency events. Workweek is 40 hours plus overtime and benefits.

Regular hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.

Responsibilities
  • Works under the direction of the Foreman and receives oral instructions;
    Foreman reviews work in progress.
  • Prepares vehicles and equipment for daily operations, including loading materials and positioning equipment as required.
  • Fuels, lubricates, and services vehicles and equipment with necessary accessories.
  • Performs tasks in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
  • Operates trucks of various sizes and hauls trailers as needed.
  • Uses hand tools and power equipment to complete assigned maintenance tasks.
  • Performs manual labor such as removing trees, leaves, brush, trash, and refuse; installs or replaces benches, fences, posts, rails, signs, and playground equipment.
  • Operates small tractors, mowing machinery, and related equipment to maintain fields and recreational areas.
  • Grades, fertilizes, seeds, and lines athletic fields.
  • Operates snow blowers and small tractors to clear snow from park areas, including skating rinks; applies sand to sidewalks.
  • Assists in the repair and construction of catch basins.
  • Performs manual work in the laying of pipe, patching or resurfacing roads, and related construction and maintenance work.
  • Routinely performs tasks of maintainers of lower grade.
  • May provide lead supervision to helpers and summer workers.
  • Performs janitorial duties at the Highway Services office and employee break room.
  • Assists in snow and leaf removal.
  • May oversee and keep written records for part‑time and community service workers.
  • Performs tasks of Maintainer I/Laborer, Highway Services, when assigned.
  • Monitors equipment performance during operation and reports malfunctions to the Supervisor.
  • Cleans and maintains buildings, equipment, facilities, and grounds.
  • Adheres to all safety procedures and regulations.
  • Provides verbal reports of completed tasks to the Foreman.
Qualifications
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions delivered in writing, verbally, or via radio communication.
  • Skilled in the safe use of hand tools and equipment, demonstrating manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to operate trucks and other vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Awareness of vehicle maintenance needs and ability to identify necessary repairs.
  • Competence in writing reports and maintaining accurate records.
  • Basic knowledge of Public Works operations, including equipment usage.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact positively with the public and Town residents.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25–50 pounds, occasionally heavier, from ground level to overhead.
  • Work performed primarily outdoors in varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Requires stamina, physical strength, and good health to perform strenuous labor.
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
Licensing
  • CDL‑B license required upon appointment.
