The MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center (SSRC) manages MSU’s waste as a resource by diverting as much of the university’s property from the landfill as possible. Currently, the SSRC is seeking an ambitious and self‑motivated MSU student to work as a Student Collections Assistant. The ideal candidate will have an interest in sustainability, recycling, and reuse; take direction and feedback positively and work efficiently and independently.

Interviewing for this position will begin prior to the job closing on Handshake.

This position can work up to 40 hours per week during the summer and must be able to work at least three 4‑hour shifts per week during fall semester. However, specific shifts are flexible around your class schedule. The SSRC is open 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Hourly Pay-rate: $15, with an increase to $16 after a 30‑day and 100‑hour probationary period.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Assist Collections drivers as a co‑pilot by getting out of the truck at each stop to perform safety measures.
  • Collect recycling commodities from building docks by lifting, carrying, and tipping containers.
  • Collect surplus items from campus buildings by lifting, carrying, and/or pushing items to box truck.
  • Assist with maintaining the cleanliness of interior and exterior of trucks.
  • Provide excellent customer assistance to campus community members.
  • Service waste containers on campus.
  • Assist with campus events by placing and servicing waste and recycling receptacles.
  • Relocate items using pallet jacks, hand trucks, or lifting.
  • Assist with various tasks in other SSRC departments.
Necessary Qualifications
  • Able to drive a university vehicle and able to pass a driver’s license check.
  • Must be an enrolled MSU student and available to work during the remainder of Spring semester and the summer.
  • Frequent lifting of 50 lb. and infrequent lifting of larger weights.
  • Able to work independently and efficiently in a busy environment.
  • Interest in sustainability, recycling, and re‑use.
  • Available to work a minimum of three 4‑hour shifts between the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Mon – Fri.
