Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
This is a multi‑skilled Hydro Plant Operator support role requiring qualification in the IC&E job family, Operations, and Mechanical skillsets, responsible for operation, monitoring, preventive maintenance, and facility maintenance at hydro stations.
Responsibilities- Perform monitoring, testing, maintenance and performance checks, and calibration of mechanical, pneumatic and electronic systems.
- Take or give instruction on operating units locally or remotely in accordance with PU&A policies.
- Operate test equipment such as voltmeter, Hart Communicator, GE/Fanuc Hand Held Monitor, RTD Tester, specific battery tester, pressure gauges, voltage/current sources, and temperature sources.
- Troubleshoot and/or monitor via PLCs.
- Repair and calibrate pressure transmitters, RTDs, valve positioners, valve actuators.
- Repair and calibrate station monitoring, recording and unit systems, generator alarms, forebay/tailrace gauges.
- Prepare, set up and conduct plant equipment performance testing.
- Review data and report abnormalities in Maximo work order system.
- Read and utilize plant drawings, blueprints, manuals, and site‑specific procedures.
- Monitor equipment performance through tests and analysis.
- Operate powerhouse cranes/hoists, forklifts and trucks.
- Execute equipment startups and shutdowns of major and auxiliary systems following PU&A standards.
- Line up systems for various modes of operation (startup, shutdown, motor, low load, emergency).
- Perform lockout/tagout on station equipment to protect workers from hazardous energy.
- Execute minor mechanical maintenance on valves, pumps and motors.
- Maintain accurate logs and records for auxiliary equipment, operator rounds and checklists.
- Perform housekeeping and facilities maintenance tasks including janitorial work.
- Use computers and tablets for timesheet entry, training modules, email, and Maximo work order close‑out.
- Generate and reference word orders in Maximo.
- Inspect dams, spillways, and inspection galleries.
- Enforce BES site requirements and use Microsoft Office tools.
- Perform LOTO duties with the Work Control Center, LOTO Desk, etc.
- Write and review site‑specific procedures.
- Enforce FERC, NERC and NERC CIP compliance.
- Provide support, training and mentoring of developing technicians.
- Communicate with internal and external customers.
- Associate’s degree in Electronics or Electrician or 3 years of related experience.
- High School Diploma or GED with 5 years of related experience in absence of a degree.
- Experience troubleshooting electrical/instrumentation equipment.
- Skill in reading electrical diagrams, schematics and one‑line drawings.
- Experience with electrical/instrumentation test equipment.
- Experience with switching and clearing electrical equipment.
- Experience with mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic applications.
- Experience with seals, pumps, valves, and bearings.
- Proficiency with PCs and other computer equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to use drawings and schematics to troubleshoot problems.
- Demonstrated mechanical maintenance skills.
- Knowledge of PLCs.
- Team‑player mindset with initiative to take leadership roles.
- Use of human‑performance improvement tools (pre‑job briefs, SOS cards, procedure adherence, STOP when unsafe).
- Knowledge of logic relaying and protective relaying.
- Proficiency in PLC logic.
- Knowledge of excitation systems.
- Training to LOTO Desk qualification level.
- Hydro‑specific operations experience.
- Knowledge of NERC, NERC CIP and FERC compliance.
Occasional overtime including weekends and holidays. Conventional Hydro sites typically follow a 4‑10 schedule with weekly rotating call‑out assignments. Pumped‑Storage Hydro sites operate a 12‑hour per day schedule with 36/48 weekly rotating day and night shifts. Physical demands include working at heights on suspended platforms and in confined spaces, lifting up to 50 lbs, extensive walking, bending, stooping, squatting, and climbing.
Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) and high‑stress situations may occur. Worksite rotations and a mix of interior and exterior powerhouse duties are expected. Employees work both independently and collaboratively.
