Experience and Education
High School diploma or equivalent and six (6) months experience in janitorial services, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of safety practices; custodial materials and equipment, methods, practices and procedures; potential hazards of the materials and equipment used in performing assigned tasks.
- Operate custodial equipment.
- Plan, coordinate and supervise the performance of simple to moderately complex contract cleaning tasks and projects.
- Perform manipulative tasks requiring eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Perform heavy manual tasks.
- Communicate with department personnel.
- Read and carry out written instructions.
- Be self‑motivated.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
- Pass a Criminal Background Check.

Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel. Frequently required to reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and manually push/pull a dolly. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
Essential Duties- Responsible for completing cleaning schedules, ensuring proper tools, supplies, materials and equipment are ordered/transported to work sites.
- Maintains cleanliness and disinfects facility common areas, restrooms, hallways and offices.
- Drives to and from all county buildings, as needed.
- Operates simple to moderately complex equipment, e.g., sweeps, mops, buffs, and vacuums floors.
- Prepares assigned equipment for safe and efficient operating condition by inspecting prior to and after use.
- Performs and schedules regular and preventive maintenance for equipment under charge.
- Utilizes various cleaning, disinfecting and waxing chemicals and compounds.
- Ensures a safe work zone by proper use of signage and cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Ensures that cleaning supplies are kept in proper supply.
- Vacuums rugs and carpets; shampoos carpet when necessary.
- Performs recycling; retrieves recyclable items from participating departments.
- Cleans doors, windows, and walls.
- Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms.
- Empties trash.
- Assists with locating items in inventory and pulling items from inventory.
- Performs setup and takedown of tables and chairs; arranges conference rooms and building lobby special events; moves furniture.
- Provides support to the maintenance mechanic staff; changes light bulbs; changes air filters; hangs pictures.
- Substitutes, if assigned, during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations.
- Commits self to providing excellent customer service and demonstrates commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts.
- Creates a high‑quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety‑related training and skills.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- Maintains a safe and healthy workplace environment.
- Must be available to work non‑traditional hours and be on call as necessary on official business.
The Custodian under direct supervision maintains the cleanliness of facilities and assists with maintenance operations as needed.
