The Maintenance Supervisor leads the maintenance function at our wood coatings manufacturing facility, ensuring production equipment, facility systems, and material handling equipment are reliable, safe, and well-maintained. This is a working supervisor role: you'll spend a significant portion of your time on the floor working alongside your team troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment while also directing daily work, developing your two direct reports, and coordinating maintenance priorities with production and plant leadership.
This role covers a broad range of technical systems: process and packaging machinery, automation and controls, electrical systems, HVAC, forklifts and material handling equipment, and general facility infrastructure. Because this is a chemical manufacturing environment, safety, regulatory compliance, and proper handling of hazardous materials are central to the role.
Key Responsibilities Hands-On Maintenance & Repair- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on production machinery, automation/controls systems, and facility equipment
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues on process and packaging equipment
- Perform or coordinate maintenance and inspections on forklifts and other material handling equipment
- Maintain HVAC systems, building infrastructure, and utilities (compressed air, steam, water systems, etc.)
- Respond to equipment breakdowns quickly to minimize production downtime
- Directly supervise two Maintenance Technicians by assigning daily work, setting priorities, and ensuring tasks are completed safely and correctly
- Train, mentor, and develop technicians' skills across electrical, mechanical, and automation disciplines
- Conduct performance feedback and support technicians' growth and cross-training
- Model safe, high-quality work practices while working alongside the team
- Maintain and continuously improve the preventive maintenance (PM) program for all production and facility equipment
- Track maintenance work orders, equipment history, and spare parts inventory
- Identify recurring equipment issues and lead root-cause troubleshooting to reduce unplanned downtime
- Coordinate maintenance schedules with production to minimize disruption to manufacturing operations
- Manage relationships with outside contractors and vendors for specialized repairs (e.g., automation programming, HVAC service, electrical contractors)
- Ensure all maintenance work is performed in compliance with OSHA regulations, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and other safety procedures
- Follow proper protocols for maintenance work involving chemical processing equipment, tanks, and hazardous materials
- Maintain compliance with electrical codes, EPA requirements, and other applicable regulations
- Promote a strong safety culture, including near-miss reporting and hazard identification
- Maintain adequate spare parts inventory for critical equipment to minimize downtime
- Source parts and equipment, working within budget guidelines
- Recommend capital equipment repairs vs. replacement based on cost and reliability data
Qualifications Required
