Job
PurposeThe Substitute Custodian is primarily responsible for maintaining an attractive, sanitary, safe facility for students, staff, and the public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities, and events; and minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure to the school district.
Qualifications / Knowledge / Skills- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- General knowledge of institutional and/or commercial cleaning techniques
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to follow direction and work independently
Entry Level Position
Reports To- Building Principal
- Supervisor of Custodians
- Custodial Foreman
- Head Custodian
- Fingerprinting and job‑related background check required
- Not covered under any collective bargaining agreement
- Not a full‑time, permanent employee of the District; substitutes are used on an as‑needed day‑to‑day basis in accordance with relevant laws and regulations
- Cleans assigned District facilities (classrooms, offices, restrooms, lunch rooms, corridors, carpets, windows, walls, bleachers, stages, locker rooms, sidewalks, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe, attractive environment
- Prepares school district facilities for daily operations (opening gates and building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flags, placing crosswalk signs, etc.) to ensure district facilities are operational and safe
- Secures facility and grounds to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability
- Arranges furnishings and equipment for meetings, classroom activities, and other events
- Reports and responds to emergency calls for custodial assistance
- Completes employer‑required training to maintain current knowledge of job‑specific, district, state, and federal rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and laws
- Completes special work assignments as assigned by the head custodian, principal (or his/her designee), and/or custodial supervisory staff
- Works cooperatively with administration, teaching staff, students, and other service departments
- Maintains daily attendance and punctuality to meet the goals of the work unit
- Adheres to all Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, and applicable state and federal regulations governing custodial operations
The role requires standing, walking, handling tools and materials, and frequent reaching. The employee may need to bend or twist at the neck and trunk, lift and move heavy objects up to 50 pounds, and sometimes push or pull items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbers. Working conditions include indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to varying weather, potential hazardous substances, and loud equipment.
