Elk Grove Village, Illinois, (pop. 33,127), is seeking a dynamic, detailed, and skills-oriented candidate for the position of Maintenance Worker in the Public Works Department. Elk Grove Village is located in Cook and DuPage Counties adjacent to O’Hare International Airport and is home to approximately 5,600 businesses.
The Public Works Department maintains Village-owned property, infrastructure, and equipment. It consists of the General Operations Division, the Utilities Division, and the Engineering Division. The Department maintains water and sewer utilities, public streets and rights-of-way, urban forestry, land, engineering, facilities, and fleet services.
The Maintenance Worker is a union position under the general supervision of a Public Works Foreman. This position will primarily be assigned to the Sewer Activity and will be expected to assist in other Activities as directed. The position performs operation, maintenance, and repair activities for the Village’s infrastructure to enhance the quality of life in our exceptional community.
KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Conducting sanitary and storm sewer CCTV inspections, flushing, and repairs to support the Village’s Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) program.
- Performing repairs and maintenance on water mains, valves, and hydrants.
- Entering and updating data in the Village’s asset management software to maintain accurate records of asset inventory, maintenance, and repair activities.
- Operating heavy trucks and equipment to repair and maintain Village infrastructure.
- Assisting with the setup, teardown, and cleanup of Village special events.
- Performing snow plowing and salt spreading as part of 24/7 winter operations to ensure safe roadway conditions.
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. This position is physically demanding and requires semi-skilled manual labor and the operation of various light and heavy-duty equipment. Working knowledge and experience in Public Works activities; skill in operating power tools and equipment; and effective communication skills. Candidates must exhibit a passion for public service and a willingness to work overtime and respond to off‑hours emergencies.
LICENSESAND CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess and maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License with a safe driving record. Required to have a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker and air brake endorsements or to obtain licenses within six (6) months of employment.
HOURS OF WORK40 hours per week
Emergency overtime as needed/required.
Alternating weekend standby assignments are required.
$30.72 - $44.18 per hour (non‑negotiable starting salary of $30.72 per union contract).
