Public Works Crew Member

The City of Elkhorn is seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual to join our Department of Public Works. In this vital role, you’ll contribute to maintaining and improving our city’s streets, parks, wastewater systems, and public facilities, helping to ensure the safety, cleanliness, and quality of life for Elkhorn residents.

As part of our team, you’ll perform general labor tasks under the guidance of the Director of Public Works and the DPW Lead positions. Your responsibilities focus on the repair and maintenance of public buildings, grounds, streets, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, and essential equipment, supporting the efficient operation of our city.

Salary and Advancement

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $24.38 to $25.36 per hour, depending on qualifications. The full salary range extends to $32.81 per hour. Employees have the opportunity to advance to a DPW Crew Member II, which is in a higher pay grade and involves operating heavy equipment and having additional experience.

Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all‑inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs street, sanitary and storm sewer maintenance: maintains streets and street signs; collects and chips brush; plows and hauls snow; trims trees; cleans and repairs storm and sanitary sewers; builds catch basins; install decorations; mowing.
  • Performs general Public Works Duties, including: basic carpentry, cement, asphalt, and equipment maintenance; hauls dirt, gravel; paints roads and buildings; erects voting booths; lawn and playing field maintenance.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma and one to two years’ experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.
  • Must possess a valid Class B Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or be able to obtain within one year of employment.
  • Must reside within fifteen (15) miles of the jurisdictional boundaries of the City, or be able to establish residency within one year of employment.
Skills and Abilities
  • Some knowledge of municipal public works and utility operations.
  • Some knowledge of the care and maintenance of public property and infrastructure.
  • Skill in operating various vehicles and machinery such as a pick‑up truck, dump truck, front end loader, tractor, paint sprayer, mechanics tools, pick axe, shovel, rake, saws, power tools, cement tools, truck, snow blower, sweeper, front‑end loader, grader, lawn mower tractor and other manual tools used in building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to climb ladders and use power tools for the installation and maintenance of facilities.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents such as sewer reports, invoices, vehicle maintenance slips, Material Safety Data Sheets, daily work schedules, and time sheets.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow instructions.
  • Ability to use and interpret sewer maps, blueprints, and policy and procedure books.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with City personnel such as Police and Fire Department personnel, Crew lead‑man, DPW Operations Manager, City Administrator, and the general public to convey or exchange information including receiving instructions from supervisors.
