Under general supervision, performs custodial and light groundskeeping duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, washing walls and fixtures, and maintaining cleanliness of the school. Also operates a school bus, performing pre‑and post‑trip inspections, obeying traffic laws, maintaining student discipline, and ensuring safe transportation.

• General knowledge of janitorial methods, materials, and equipment.
• Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and cleaning materials.

• Knowledge of safe bus practices, traffic laws, and school bus regulations.
• Ability to physically inspect the bus per operating instructions.

• Ability to keep the bus clean.
• Ability to complete required reports.
• Ability to exercise tact and courtesy with parents, guardians, students, and staff.
• Ability to climb a ladder.

• High School diploma or GED.
• Some custodial experience or equivalent training.

Valid driver’s license issued by North Carolina and CDL. Must comply with School System Policy 7241 for commercial motor vehicle operators.

• Clean floors, restrooms, windows, walls, doors, vents, blinds, and light fixtures.
• Empty trash and dispose of recyclables.
• Clean sidewalks, watch ground conditions, shovel snow, and apply de‑icing agents as needed.
• Replace burned‑out light bulbs and ceiling tiles.
• Prepare requisition forms for supplies.
• Set rodent and pest traps and dispose of traps.
• Perform minor appliance maintenance.
• Move furniture and arrange rooms for meetings.
• Open and secure buildings, operate lights and HVAC as appropriate.
• Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip bus inspections, document findings.
• Report mechanical defects and vehicle incidents.
• Transport students to authorized stops, monitor discipline, and report issues.
• Observe traffic laws and safety regulations while driving.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety of the bus interior.
• Complete time card and required reports.
• Secure the bus at the end of each run, ensuring all windows and doors locked.
• Assist in emergency situations per operating instructions.

• Physical demands include medium exertion up to 50 lbs, standing, walking, moving, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
• Work indoors and outdoors, interacting with staff, students, and the public.
