Maintenance Assistant II

The Maintenance Assistant II assists in accomplishing that mission by performing housekeeping, groundskeeping, and building services, assisting with the operation and maintenance of building and grounds.
PositionDuties
40% Housekeeping
- Cleans and disinfects washrooms and refills supplies
- Cleans and sanitizes furniture, woodwork, offices, service desks, & computers
- Cleans windows, doors, walls, baseboards, ceiling fixtures, etc.
- Cleans and dusts bookshelves and end panels
- Empties trash and cleans trash containers
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and buffs tile floors
- Vacuums, cleans/spot cleans carpets/upholstery, and mats
35% Building Operations and Maintenance
- Arms the burglar alarm when closing the building
- Assists Circulation staff when bed bugs are encountered in returned items; sprays, sets up bed bug heater, cleans book-drop bin
- Assists with custodial supply inventory
- Assists with electrical, plumbing, and/or other related building projects/upgrades as needed
- Assists with maintenance and operation of HVAC system and related equipment
- Maintains vacuums, scrubbers, snow throwers, emergency equipment, etc.
- Paints and repairs walls, doors, and parking stripes
- Repairs and/or assembles office equipment, furniture, and shelves
- Repairs electrical fixtures, lights, outlets, switches, and replaces bulbs
- Repairs plumbing fixtures, faucets, valve assemblies, and drains
- Responds to emergencies during off-duty hours as needed
- Troubleshoots building issues such as clogged toilets and sinks, continuous running water, hot water tank leakage
- Uses a welder to repair meeting room chairs
15% Building Services
- Delivers materials and supplies to branch location(s) and runs errands
- Empties book/video drops
- Opens and closes building for staff and public, performs building security check
- Receives and distributes supplies and materials; moves furniture and equipment
- Sets up and takes down tables and chairs for events and meeting rooms
- Sets up parking cones, tents, tables, chairs, and carries equipment for outdoor programs
5% Grounds keeping
- Shovels snow and runs snow thrower; salts walks and parking lot
- Sweeps walks and parking lots; picks up litter and debris
5% Miscellaneous
- Alerts supervisor to problems encountered in work routine
- Attends meetings and serves on internal committees
- Directs patrons to appropriate areas of the library
- Maintains and increases knowledge and skills through attendance at meetings, conferences, training seminars and in-service training sessions
- Participates in the Strategic Planning process
- Performs additional duties and assignments, as requested
- Sends and receives email and reads information on the Internet
Qualifications
Education, Training and/or Experience
- High School diploma, or equivalent required; a minimum of two (2) years' experience in custodial or building maintenance
- Valid Ohio driver's license with acceptable driving record
- Valid low pressure boiler's license preferred
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics
- Ability to drive a motor vehicle
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to organize work
- Ability to read and understand basic technical manuals
- Ability to tactfully and effectively communicate with patrons and staff in a personable and professional manner
- Ability to interact with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds for the purpose of providing professional service
- Ability to work independently and perform work in a safe and efficient manner
- Knowledge of basic HVAC system operation and maintenance
- Knowledge of basic painting, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing repair methods
- Knowledge of emergency and maintenance equipment operation, troubleshooting and repair
- Knowledge of grounds keeping and housekeeping methods
- Knowledge of moving and lifting methods
- Knowledge of the American Library Association Library Bill of Rights
- Knowledge of Core Competencies required for position
- Knowledge of Pest Management techniques
- Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
- Proficient with online resources; including e-mail and online operating systems
- Working knowledge of library policies, procedures and services
- Understanding of patron confidentiality requirements and ethics responsibilities under Ohio law
Physical Demands
Work requires heavy/hard physical effort, includes working with hand tools; lifting or moving heavy materials or furniture weighing thirty pounds or more; shoveling snow; climbing ladders or working from lift at 25 to 30 feet. Frequent bending, stooping, and/or kneeling. Requires the ability to communicate and exchange information and prepare work documents
