Overview
The Head Carpenter is responsible for coordinating stage operations for the Hult Center's productions, ensuring safety, maintenance, and effective communication among crew and management.
Responsibilities- Supports Silva and Soreng productions in advance duties
- Assesses and maintains equipment operations and logs
- Coordinates stage departments and crew during load-in, show call, and load-out
- Communicates directly with Front of House personnel and management
- Monitors stagehand safety, performance, and behavior, reporting concerns to supervisor
- Performs basic stagehand tasks across carpentry, audio, electrics, and video as needed
- Oversees assembly, maintenance, repair, placement, and operation of scenery and related structures
- Assists in pre‑production planning, development of plans and plots, and leads or assists in advance, set modifications, load‑in, rehearsal, and show functions
- Manages house equipment and integration of user group systems
- Supports diversity and inclusive workplace culture
- Performs additional duties as assigned
- Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, electronic)
- Leadership experience and knowledge of all stage disciplines
- Minimum 3 years in a lead position at a professional performing‑arts center; terminal degree or tour experience acceptable
- Three years of related experience in stage trades, including 1 year as a stage carpenter
- Professional performing‑arts venue experience equivalent to the Hult Center
- High‑school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
- Pass background check, physical assessment and drug test
- Valid Oregon driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
- Possession or ability to obtain a journey‑level stage electrician certification within six months (depending on assignment)
- CPR certification or ability to obtain within six months (depending on assignment)
- Knowledge of theatrical carpentry, equipment, supplies, and safety hazards
- Ability to operate theater equipment and communicate with diverse populations
- Flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and extended hours
- Strong teamwork and independent working skills
- Physical stamina for heavy lifting up to 100 pounds, climbing, and standing for extended periods
- Work at heights and in dark or noisy environments
- Follow verbal and written instructions and work well with co‑workers
- Knowledge of rail systems, theatrical electrical and dimming systems, or sound equipment
- Ability to lead and coach staff and provide independent judgment and diplomacy
Work requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting for extended periods; may involve handling hazardous substances and working at heights above the stage.
Salary, Benefits, and Other DetailsHourly rate: $27.92. Benefits are offered through the City of Eugene’s program. Union representation:
International Alliance of Theatrical State Employees (IATSE).
Schedule:
0.5 FTE with flexibility for outside normal hours.
Location:
Hult Center, 1 Eugene Center, Eugene, Oregon.
