BUILDING MAINTENANCE CUSTODIAN - PUBLIC WORKS Responsibilities
- Perform minor building maintenance on assigned buildings such as changing light bulbs, replacing soap dispensers, and repairing faucets, urinals and plumbing valves.
- Inspect and adjust boilers, drain tanks, and perform minor maintenance on boiler and heating systems.
- Sweep, mop, scrub, and polish floors; sweep and vacuum rugs; spot clean carpets.
- Dust and polish furniture and woodwork.
- Empty, clean, and line waste receptacles and dispose of trash.
- Wash doors, windows, walls, ceilings, venetian blinds, furniture and light fixtures.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms; restock restroom supplies as necessary.
- Move office furniture and equipment and make minor repairs; report the need for maintenance and repair.
- Strip, seal and buff floors.
- Close windows, turn off lights, and lock doors to secure buildings; turn on building security systems and inspect for correct operation.
- Keep basic records of work performed, timesheets, etc.
- Observe safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition.
- Correct or report any safety or fire hazards.
- Follow label instructions to mix and dilute cleansers, disinfectants and stripping agents to ensure proper strength for use.
- Use a variety of custodian tools, equipment and supplies; maintain equipment and materials in proper condition.
- Report unauthorized persons and other security problems.
- Set up meeting rooms and rearrange furniture.
M-F 5:00 PM to 1:30 AM.
This position is represented by the AFSCME bargaining unit.
Qualifications- Possess sufficient strength and stamina to maneuver equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to work evening shifts, standby, and overtime as necessary.
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license may be required.
- Knowledge of principles, practices and tools of routine building maintenance.
- Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, and safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of use and minor maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in janitorial work.
- Knowledge of safety practices and equipment related to the work.
- Skill in performing routine building maintenance and repair work.
- Skill in understanding and following written and oral instructions.
- Skill in completing custodial assignments independently without immediate supervision.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
Education and Experience
One year of experience in janitorial or custodial work.
