The job of Teacher Of Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired (Itinerant) is done for the purpose/s of providing specialized instruction and services to meet the unique educational needs of students with visual impairments by developing, selecting and modifying instructional plans and materials of students using Braille, large print and technological devices. Teachers will provide input regarding the planning of instructional goals, benchmarks/objectives, and methods regarding students' Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

Teachers of the Visually Impaired will conduct functional vision/learning media assessments and provide interpretations of assessments on the impact of students' learning. An educator licensed in this field may also provide staff development and serve in the role of mentor, advisor, and advocate for the students and families for whom they serve. This job reports to Principal.

• Assists the student, parents, special and general education personnel, and the students' sighted peers
  for the purpose of understanding the unique educational needs and learning characteristics of visually
  impaired students.
• Assists in determining and procuring classroom equipment and materials for students with visual
  impairments to learn (e.g. large-type or Braille texts, low vision devices, specialized assistive technology,
  supplementary materials, room modifications, lighting changes, etc.) for the purpose of providing timely
  access to ensure that the students' maximum participation and learning needs are met.
• Assists the site administrator and teachers for the purpose of making environmental adjustments for the
  students in the school.
• Collaborates with classroom teachers for the purpose of identifying instructional areas in which the
  students require assistance.
• Collaborates with the Individual Education Plan (IEP) team for the purpose of developing student IEPs,
  including goals, modifications, supplementary aids and services, learning styles, and transition plans,
  including adapting job related experiences.
• Collaborates with instructional staff, other regular and special education school personnel, parents and a
  variety of community resources for the purpose of coordinating programs and services for the visually
  impaired student.
• Compiles and analyzes data on student progress and use response to intervention for the purpose of
  adjusting interventions or strategies as indicated.
• Consults with diagnosticians, classroom teachers, students and parents for the purpose of determining
  appropriate evaluations, modifications, and test administration.
• Facilitates student learning for the purpose of achieving success in academic, interpersonal and daily
  living skills through a defined lesson plans.
• Implements technology in a proficient manner for the purpose of enhancing and providing access to
  students' instructional programs, communication, collection and analysis of data, and compiling reports.
• Instructs students and staff on the use of adaptive devices and assistive technology (e.g. computers,
  note takers, digital recording devices, refreshable Braille displays, screenreaders, low vision devices),
  etc.) for the purpose of successful student outcomes.
• Interprets specific eye conditions for the purpose of determining the educational implication of the visual
  impairment and the results of functional vision and learning media assessments.
• Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Models conversation, manners, clean up activities, listening skills, etc. for the purpose of demonstrating
  appropriate social and interpersonal behavior.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in job-related area
• Illinois Professional Educator License
• Endorsement for a Teacher of Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired
• Licensure in orientation and mobility preferred

Compensation and Benefits  school year)
Minimum starting salary with Bachelors degree:
$56,920 (includes District paid TRS pension) - pro-rated to start date

Minimum starting salary with Masters degree:
$62,042 (includes District paid TRS pension) - pro-rated to start date
