Job Summary

The Assistant Superintendent of Academics directs the district’s academic vision, ensuring equitable access to high‑quality instruction and graded outcomes. Key duties include overseeing curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional learning, and school management, while collaborating with the Superintendent’s Cabinet to align district strategy.

Responsibilities
  • Vision, Strategy, and System Coherence
    • Establish and lead a unified vision for teaching and learning that aligns curriculum, instruction, assessment, student supports, and school leadership development.
    • Ensure coherence across all academic divisions so schools experience aligned expectations, supports, and resources.
    • Drive implementation of the instructional framework to provide consistent and high‑quality learning experiences for all students.
  • Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Leadership
    • Oversee design, adoption, implementation, and continuous improvement of high‑quality, standards‑aligned curricular materials.
    • Lead the development of a district wide instructional model that promotes rigorous, culturally responsive, and differentiated teaching practices.
    • Ensure a coherent assessment system that includes formative, interim, and summative measures to monitor student progress.
    • Monitor and evaluate instructional programs using data to guide continuous improvement.
  • Leadership of Directors and Cross‑Functional Teams
    • Supervise and develop directors across multiple academic divisions, building capacity and ensuring accountability.
    • Lead cross‑functional collaboration to address complex student and school needs, especially at the intersection of programming, services, and climate.
    • Establish clear goals, performance expectations, and feedback cycles aligned to district priorities.
  • Schools Management and Leadership Development
    • Provide direct oversight of schools, ensuring effective daily operations and strong instructional leadership.
    • Develop capacity of principals, assistant principals, and school leadership teams through coaching and strategic guidance.
    • Support schools in creating safe, inclusive, and academically rigorous learning environments addressing both academic and social‑emotional needs.
  • Professional Learning and Capacity Building
    • Design and implement a multi‑year professional learning system that is job‑embedded, data‑informed, and aligned to instructional priorities.
    • Ensure professional learning advances instructional quality, supports diverse learners, and aligns with evaluation systems and leadership standards.
  • Equity, Access, and Student‑Centered Supports
    • Ensure equitable access to grade‑level content and high‑quality instruction for all learners, including those in special education and multilingual programs.
    • Lead the integration of academic programming with student services to support the whole child.
    • Promote culturally responsive and sustaining practices across schools and departments.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
    • Build collaborative relationships with school leaders, educators, students, families, and community partners.
    • Provide clear, transparent communication on academic priorities, initiatives, and outcomes.
    • Lead systems to address and resolve curriculum, instruction, and operational concerns promptly.
  • Compliance, Policy, and Operational Alignment
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district requirements related to special education, multilingual services, and instructional mandates.
    • Oversee required reporting and ensure fidelity of policies, procedures, and practices across schools.
    • Collaborate with Cabinet departments to align academic priorities with staffing, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Continuous Improvement and Accountability
    • Use data and evidence to evaluate the effectiveness of academic programs, school performance, and leadership development.
    • Establish systems for ongoing monitoring, feedback, and adjustment to progress toward district goals.
