Position: Learning Strategist/ Study Skills Coordinator

Learning Strategist/Study Skills Coordinator

The Learning Strategist/Study Skills Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Athletics for Academic Services and Student Development. The Office of Academic Services and Student Development is a support office for varsity student-athletes. Services are provided for a population of approximately 500 students, their parents, and coaches. The office also serves as a liaison to the University's academic and administrative community on behalf of Northwestern University Department of Athletics and Recreation (NUDAR).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides intensive academic support to an assigned group of identified student-athletes from various sports (i.e. one-on-one and small group skill development within content areas).
  • Assess and evaluate the students' academic needs and prescribes additional academic assistance as needed.
  • Provides workshops for all student-athletes to aid in the improvement of study habits and skills.
  • Communicates regularly with Athletic Academic Advisors, Coaching staff, and a team of administrators to share information on academic progress of assigned student-athletes.
  • Serve as Coordinator of the Study Skills Program.
  • Coordinates the N'Cat Tutoring Program, including the hiring, training and supervision of the tutorial staff.
  • Manages a small group learning team weekly; reviews for examinations and individual tutoring sessions.
  • Oversee the study hall program (i.e. hiring, training, and supervision of study hall monitors as well as the weekly reporting).
  • Meet with prospective student-athletes to discuss the university's philosophy as it regards student-athletes and the support programs offered at Northwestern.
  • Act as the departmental liaison with the AccessibleNU (ANU) on Northwestern's campus.
  • Refers selected individuals for ADHD/learning disability testing as needed in consultation with the Associate Director of Athletics for Academic Services & Student Development, the Head Team Physician, and the Athletic Training Staff.
  • Builds relationships across campus to promote student-athlete welfare and community integration.
  • May attend athletic events to maintain maximum knowledge intercollegiate sports relevant to various assignments.
  • Assist in other projects and programs at the request of the Associate Director of Athletics for Academic Services and Student Development.
  • Assist in the hiring and training of an intern that will help support the logistics of the N'Cat Tutoring Program
  • Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws and interpretations of the Big Ten Conference, CSC and the NCAA.
  • Responsible for adhering to all Department and University continuing education initiatives and required certifications and trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with students providing supplemental academic mentoring, preferably in a college/university setting.
  • Communicates effectively one-to-one, in small groups and in public speaking contexts; writes precise, well-organized emails, letters and proposals while using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; knowledge of Grades First software is preferred.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the NCAA, CSC, Big Ten Conference and Northwestern University preferred.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and effectively interact and establish engaging relationships with a wide variety of constituents.
  • Master's degree strongly preferred.
