Department: WCAS Asian Languages & Culture Modern Japanese Cultural Studies

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Northwestern University invites applications for a full time, senior appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor specializing in modern Japanese cultural studies (19th century to the present) with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2027. The area of specialization is open, though fields of expertise may include literary studies, film and media studies, and/or the study of visual and material culture.

The successful candidate will teach four courses annually over the course of three academic quarters, advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to a vibrant interdisciplinary community of scholars of Asian cultures iew of applications will begin October 9, 2026.

Salary

This is an open rank search. The expected base pay based on rank is as follows:

  • Associate Professor: $120,000 - $150,000
  • Professor: $150,000 - $200,000

This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment, does not include summer salary, and is subject to negotiation.

Northwestern University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including years since terminal degree, training, and field or discipline; departmental budget availability;

internal comparators; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
