Overview
Design Science is a fast-growing organization that focuses on Human Factors in the medical device space. We offer co-op opportunities for Summer/Fall (6 months) and Fall/Winter (6 months) semesters in Chicago (Evanston). This is an opportunity to explore human factors work with a dynamic team and contribute to patient safety and device usability.
About the JobThe Design Science Co-op position requires a 6-month commitment due to extensive training. The 6 months do not need to be consecutive, but you must be a registered student for the duration of the co-op. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position. You MUST be enrolled in a BA/BS, MA/MS, or PhD degree program to participate in the co-op program at Design Science.
The Human Factors Engineering Co-op will assist with design control, risk management, and human factors engineering support for patient-centric, safe, reliable, and innovative devices, with guidance from team members and reference documents. The role includes human factors activities from formative usability assessments to final summative design validation studies, working with a project team across development phases of device and combination products, and contributing to deliverables for regulatory filing, product launch, and post-market surveillance.
Job Responsibilities- Contribute to the preparation phases of usability studies, including protocol writing, screener creation for recruitment, survey creation for data collection, study room and video equipment setup, supply tracking, inventory, and dry runs.
- Assist during usability studies, including note-taking/data collection, video recording and observation, training participants on device use, and data organization.
- Contribute to and perform data analysis to support reporting, which may include root cause analyses, summarizing data/findings, creating graphics, and reviewing video footage.
- Participate in regular meetings and check-ins, including presenting to the research team as appropriate, and collaborate with project teams, supervisors, and mentors.
- Work on internal projects for personal development and for Design Science, such as social media strategy, facilities improvements, external presentations, or internal research studies.
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree program in human factors engineering, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with Microsoft Office 365 applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Required
- Ability to work full-time onsite at Design Science’s offices in Evanston, IL.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Good problem solving and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn on cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to travel domestically up to 30% of the time is possible.
- Finalist will be required to pass a background check.
- Ability to work 40 hours and commit to a 6-month co-op either consecutively or within a 12-month period (NOT 2 summers).
Frequent use of a computer. Frequent sitting, standing, keyboarding. Must be able to push, pull, lift up to 30 lbs.
