The Opportunity
Grumman|Butkus Associates is adding an experienced Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineer to our team based in metro Chicago (Evanston, IL). GBA brings together the expertise of talented engineers to offer high‑end, sustainable building consulting and MEP engineering services for blue‑chip clients across numerous critical spaces in the built environment. Our services include design for HVAC, electrical power and lighting, low voltage systems, plumbing, medical gas, and fire protection systems, building electrification, net zero energy, commissioning, and sustainability consulting.
YourRole
- Perform plumbing and fire protection design for a variety of projects, including but not limited to buildings and facilities such as hospitals, laboratories, high‑rise residential, hotel, office, and other commercial and institutional projects.
- Incorporate design changes using Revit and/or AutoCAD software.
- Perform system calculations, pipe sizing, fixture selections, sprinkler selection and placement, and equipment sizing.
- Meet project schedules and work within budgetary constraints.
- Attend meetings with architects, owners, and building managers to discuss current or future projects.
- Review submittals and provide responses to Requests for Information.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
- Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- Four to ten years of experience in designing plumbing and fire protection systems for healthcare, higher education, high‑rise residential, hotel, and office buildings, and other commercial, institutional facilities.
- Experience in medical gas systems design is a plus.
- Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD software.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook).
- Excellent technical skills, strong communication, analytical and interpersonal skills.
- Comprehensive knowledge and interpretation of code compliance requirements and industry standards.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and in a highly collaborative team environment.
- PE registration is highly preferred, or FE with the ability to obtain a PE.
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed.
