Position: Principal Human Factors Engineer Chicagoland "UPDATED 1/30"

Job Description

We are seeking a Principal Human Factors Engineer to join our team in the Chicagoland region.

The Principal Human Factors Engineer will work in multidisciplinary teams to design usability studies, moderate studies, collect and analyze data, and produce detailed reports. The role also involves presenting findings to internal and external stakeholders, developing usability files, conducting risk analysis, and mentoring junior engineers. Leadership responsibilities may include managing project teams and contributing to process improvements.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MS/MA in human factors engineering, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, or related field AND at least 5 years of industry experience in human factors in healthcare or another safety‑critical industry; OR
  • BS/BA in a related field AND at least 8 years of industry experience in human factors in a safety‑critical industry.
  • Hands‑on experience with medical devices or combination products.
  • Proven track record deploying research techniques (field research, usability testing, ergonomics, expert review, etc.) across multiple product portfolios.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and producing final‑delivery reports.
  • Expert moderation skills for usability testing.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Ability to work full time in Evanston, IL and travel up to 30 % domestically and internationally.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple projects.
  • Successful background check required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience creating usability file deliverables such as application specifications, user interface requirements, and use‑related risk assessments.
  • Understanding of FDA regulatory guidance on safety and usability of medical devices.
  • Familiarity with industry guidance (AAMI/ANSI HE75:2009, IEC 62366‑1:2015/62366‑2:2016, ISO 14971:2019, etc.).
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, design, psychology, and other fields.
