Hourly Pay Range:

$69.08 - $107.07 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Job Summary

The Medication Safety Manager manages all aspects of medication safety. As a member of our pharmacy team, you will provide specialized guidance to the hospital on all manner of medication safety related issues which can include occurrence reports, root cause analysis, ISMP recommendations, regulatory standards, and high-risk processes. Where applicable, this role will also serve as a primary preceptor for pharmacy residents and must comply with all requirements associated with the training program and accrediting bodies.

What you will do:

  • Medication safety and adverse drug event report review which includes, following up with employees, reviewing processes, developing processes for improvements, collating data and reporting through various committees.
  • Lead medication safety committee, establishing standing committee agenda items as well as ad hoc reviews.
  • Participate in meetings and committees as the subject matter expert for medication safety, including Failure Modes and Effects Analysis and Root Cause Analysis
  • Develop and own policies and procedures as related to medication safety
  • Develop a medication safety scorecard that can be used to identify and benchmark process improvement initiatives
  • Work closely with pharmacy department leaders, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to optimize safe medication processes
  • Assist in the development and implementation of evidence-based clinical protocols and guidelines
  • Support the review and development of order sets, protocols, therapy plans, treatment plans, and clinical decision support in the EHR are updated as appropriate, as needed
  • Collaborate in research and quality improvement projects related to pharmaceutical care and medication safety.
  • Stay current with developments in pharmacy practice and contribute to the professional growth of the department.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state pharmacy laws and regulatory bodies.
  • Precept and provide quality experiences to pharmacy students and pharmacy residents
  • Maintain expertise and clinical skills by monitoring literature, list-serves, clinical societies, and attending developmental conferences and meetings. Share relevant information with department staff and managers to contribute to overall knowledge within the department.
  • Train newly hired pharmacist and technician staff on medication safety and just culture
  • Communicate professionally and effectively between pharmacy staff and other health care professionals
  • Review high risk processes from medication safety perspective to ensure mitigation of risks
  • Establishes goals as outlined in self-evaluation information and works to achieve those goals

What you will need:

  • Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree Pharmacy Required or Doctorate Pharmacy Required. Doctorate preferred.
  • Certification:
    Current pharmacist licensure in the state of Illinois required. Certification through Board of Pharmacy Specialties preferred.
  • Experience:

    PGY1 residency and 1 year of pharmacy practice as appropriate for program setting or PGY1 residency and PGY2 residency or at least 3 years of pharmacy practice as appropriate for the program setting.
