A Brief Overview:
A Nurse Educator is a nurse with previous clinical experience in the care of med-surg patients, who may or may not have had previous educational experience, whose focus is on staff development and nursing education. Reporting to the Director of Nursing Professional Development and working in collaboration with the unit manager. The Clinical Nurse Educator – Department Based elevates professional nursing practice within the med-surg patient population by developing, coaching, and mentoring nursing staff.
They also maintain clinical proficiency by providing direct patient care, precepting, and delivering bedside “just-in-time” education to nursing staff.
What you will do:
- This role includes providing direct patient care.
- Acts as a clinical resource to staff; maintains visibility in the clinical environment for just in time learning facilitation and/or assisting in providing direct patient care
- Flexibility in scheduling to accommodate providing educational activities at various times of the day and various days of the week.
- Serve as a clinical mentor and role model for new and existing staff.
- Collaborates with Clinical Nurse Manager to assess education and performance needs of staff. Serve as a resource to Clinical Managers/Clinical Coordinators in defining education and performance needs of staff.
- Supports the role transition, role integration, skill acquisition and mastery as nursing staff advance from novice to expert.
- Assists in the development and implementation of unit/service line/area based competency requirements for nurses and patient care technicians
- Facilitates the onboarding of employees to ensure integration to the role on both unit and system-wide levels, focusing on retention and growth for licensed and unlicensed team members.
- Manage education and training processes/activities to foster learning using strategies that engage learners in critical inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving, and foster the development of competence in learners.
- Precepts registered nurses new to the department.
- Mentors and evaluates preceptors to enhance learning experiences for all new hires.
- Evaluates orientation and onboarding experiences to ensure newly hired team members are prepared to practice safely and independently.
- Organizes and acts as a resource for on unit in-services for new products, equipment, policies/procedures/practice.
- In collaboration with Clinical Nurse Manager, partner with staff to lead unit council development and participation in shared decision-making councils.
- Partners with Clinical Nurse Manager to drive unit safety, quality outcomes and patient experience.
- Promote a positive and professional climate and provide resources for learning that facilitate the life-long learning process.
- Support and promote specialty certification preparation.
- Demonstrates knowledge of effective communication principles and promotes communication among disciplines
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What you will need:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in nursing required or Diploma Degree in Nursing and Bachelor’s Degree in Health-Related Field. Masters Degree in Nursing preferred.
- Certification: Current Professional Nursing Licensure in the State of Illinois. Current nursing specialty certification; if no specialty nursing certification, certification required within one year of assuming role. Current Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and/or Neonatal Resuscitation as applicable to role.
