What you will do
  • The Clinical Nurse Coordinator is a Registered Nurse designated to facilitate the functioning of the unit. The Clinical Nurse Coordinator demonstrates excellent clinical skills and acts as a resource to the staff. Major components of this role include the ability to coordinate, delegate, communicate and think critically on clinical and operational issues. Reports directly to the Unit Manager.
  • Functions as a resource person for the nursing staff and medical staff.
  • Collaborates with admitting, the Bed Coordinator, and/or the Supervisor to facilitate the plan for timely placement of all admissions and transfers.
  • Makes rounds on patients, keeping abreast of patient condition/changes.
  • Facilitates the bed control on a unit basis by contacting physicians to potentially obtain early discharge orders and assist nursing staff in the process of discharging patients in a timely manner.
  • Is a participating member of the Nursing DIG Committee to identify opportunities for improving patient throughput.
  • Ensures adequate and appropriate coverage for the unit that considers census, acuity and RN: patient ratio. Plans for and makes unit assignments based on staffing, competency of staff, coverage of following shifts.
  • Delegates new admission/transfers to appropriate RN based on unit criteria and adjusts patient care assignments as necessary.
  • Delegates work to non-professional staff (CNA, Unit Secretary); counsels professional and non-professional staff and gives feedback when necessary.
  • Delegates unit assignments (e.g., crash cart checks, temperature checks)
  • Prioritizes bed clean‑up with housekeeper and identifies any stat cleaning needs.
  • Participates with the staff evaluation process. Provides information to the department nurse manager or director for the administration of annual performance evaluations including peer review, goal‑setting, performance improvement and/or progressive discipline.
  • Orients agency personnel to unit. Provides feedback to them throughout shift.
  • Evaluates agency personnel. Gives temporary s for PYXIS.
  • Coordinates staff and their duties during a code.
  • Acts as a resource to nursing staff in problem solving resolution of patient care issues.
  • Communicates and follows up with other departments on unit/patients needs.
  • In cases of internal or external disaster, directs unit activities.
  • Reports significant clinical events to Nursing Supervisor or Nurse Manager.
  • Communicates unit status to incoming Clinical Nurse Coordinator (Resource Nurse).
  • Completes end of shift Summary Report.
  • Assists with orientation of new employees. Provides feedback to them and the Unit Manager.
  • As identified within the Rapid Response and Stroke Team protocols, functions as a member of these teams.
What you will need
  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing, with a Bachelor of Nursing preferred.
  • Two (2) years experience as a Staff Nurse.
  • Clinical nursing skills, effective communication, teaching and motivational skills.
  • Specialty Board Certification within 2 years of promotion.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in Illinois. Certification in area of expertise preferred.
  • American Heart Association CPR Certification.
