The job of Certified School Nurse is done for the purpose/s of providing direct nursing services and health
related instruction to students to maximize health and wellness in the school community. All duties are
performed in accordance with district/state board of education policies and procedures and state law
regarding nurse practice.

This job reports to Building Principal & Coordinator of Health Services.

Essential Functions

Administers first aid, CPR, AED, medication, and specialized medical treatments with appropriate
documentation (e.g. oral suctioning, catheterization, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care
for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children in accordance with professional standards, school policy
and procedures, and state and local mandates.

Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health
related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with
legal requirements as a mandated reporter.

Assists with and/or administers mandated screenings (e.g. vision, dental, hearing, etc.) for the purpose
of referring medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured
children (requires state credentials as a Vision and Hearing Screener).

Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies for the purpose of
promoting and/or securing student health services; providing information and complying with legal
requirements.

Conducts age appropriate programs and/or activities in conjunction with classroom curriculum (e.g.
health education, nutritional workshops, etc.) for the purpose of supporting established lesson plans.

Develops and administers a coordinated school health program for the purpose of maintaining,
promoting and/or securing student health services and providing information and complying with legal
requirements.

Develops individual student care plans and emergency action plans for the purpose of addressing
students' health needs; providing direction to site personnel and/or implementing directions provided by
parents and/or physicians.

Maintains student's confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans, agency referrals, accident
reports, immunizations, physical exams and medical conditions, and the related archival responsibilities,
etc.) for the purpose of providing information to assure compliance with state mandates and professional
standards.

Maintains contact with the Coordinator of Health Services, principal, teachers, other school personnel,
and parents/guardians for the purpose of advising them of changes in student health and/or
recommending further medical and/or emotional intervention to enhance cooperative action in order to
meet the health and safety needs of students.

Maintains the daily environment of the health office facility and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the
efficient and effective functioning of the Health Office.

Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, and interdisciplinary teams for the
purpose of gathering, conveying and/or sharing information on students health needs, service delivery,
and educational programs; and/or improving skills and knowledge as dictated by State of Illinois
licensure.

Participates as a member of the curriculum committee for the purpose of serving as a resource and
specialist in health issues.

Participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team for the purpose of identification, evaluation, and
placement of students into special education programs.

Performs other health or school related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and
effective functioning of the Health Service Department.

Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. quantity reports, student services, correspondence,
internal audits, care plans, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference,
and/or conveying information.

Provides health related classroom instruction for the purpose of supporting established lesson plans and
addressing students' health needs.

Provides and/or delegates direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to
students and staff (e.g. nursing assessment, identifying health problems, making referrals for diagnosis
and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and
maintaining appropriate documentation, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care in accordance
with professional standards, school policy and procedures, and state and local mandates.

Recommends modifications of the school program for the purpose of providing accommodations for
students due to a health deficit.

Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g. fights,
suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students
personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory…
