Job SummaryThe Research Technologist 2 supports undergraduate teaching labs in Chemical & Biological Engineering & Biomedical Engineering by conducting experimental research lab work, assisting with design of lab phases, aiding students in lab work, and maintaining a safe laboratory environment. Responsibilities include repairing and maintaining equipment, ordering and tracking chemicals, managing hazardous waste, assisting with new experiment construction, supporting student labs under faculty supervision, and running labs following appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices.
This is a one‑year term position subject to renewal, dependent on performance and funding.
- DNA, RNA, protein isolation, purification and expression, Southern, Northern, Western blotting
- PCR, RT-PCR
- Plasmid preparation
- Cloning, mapping and sequencing of DNA
- Recombinant virus production and purification
- Cell culture, cell isolation
- Functional studies
- Transfection
- Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, block preparation and sectioning, staining
- Immunohistochemistry
- Microscopy
- Flow cytometry
- ELISA, ELISpot assay
- Cytokine assay
- Antibody production and purification
- Husbandry
- Breeding and screening transgenic mice
- Dissections
- Blood collection
- Surgical procedures
- Database management of colony
- Maintain detailed records of results including collecting, extracting & entering data
- Manipulate, interpret & present results
- Prepare charts & graphs for presentations & publications
- Perform scientific literature searches to support research
- Complete portions of grant applications, manuscripts & publications
- Track & summarize lab supply expenses
- Verify accuracy of invoices
- Order & maintain inventory of reagents, mice & lab supplies
- Train students
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of electronics, machinery, piping/tubing, and experimental data acquisition systems
- Experience with biological experiments, ideally including in vivo animal experiments
- Familiarity with gas chromatography and/or high-performance liquid chromatography desirable
